Pantera's Dimebag Darrell shot and killed!

I am right there with you. I grew up in Garland and had been listening to Pantera every since they were playing keggers. I saw them at the basement on several occassions. Vinnie and Darrell were great guys and I hung out with them more than once.

I mentioned in the pit thread about this shooting, how I hadn’t been this upset about the death of a musician since SRV died. I just learned about this, maybe 10 minutes ago. I think I’ll go home tonight and sit down with the guitar and a 12 pack and play some of the old Pantera tunes.

:frowning:

R.I.P. Darrell

Makes Cemetary Gates that much more poignant…

On my way out to my car I picked up my old CD case and just had to load all of my Pantera disks into the changer. All this over a breakup? Ridiculous.

Can anyone explain the breakup to me? Despite having been a huge fan, I didn’t even know they had officially broken up, nor had I heard of Damageplan. I know that Phil is an “asshole junkie motherfucker,” according to Oderus Urungus, but what exactly happened?

Also, this is definitely not good for us non-idiot-violent-murderous-asshole-son-of-a-bitch concertgoers who like to jump on stage and goof around for a few seconds before diving back into the crowd. I wouldn’t sneak past security to do it but at some shows it’s accepted and almost encouraged. I suspect that, this being an intimate 200-person show, they might not’ve thought much was out of the ordinary when the guy jumped on stage.

I’ve read elsewhere that the shooter had to climb a fence to get onstage and had security following him, so that may not be true.

THanks Worldy, but you give me way too much credit.

Same here, Cisco. No clue that they had officially broken up despite following Pantera for many years. But now that I’m looking at things, I see that it was a very publicly(at least in metal circles) ugly breakup. Rum,ors and articles and color commentary from everyone who is involved.

From what I’ve read, the band had a series of problems with Anselmo, not the least of which was that he was a heroin addict (something he hid from the band until he OD’d). There were also issues related to side bands that Anselmo was trying to record with. Darryl and Vinnie kept giving Anselmo time to record with other bands and get off the smack but he kept relapsing and months were turning into years and Pantera was stagnating with no new recordings. The last straw was when Anselmo began badmouthing Pantera from the stage with one of his side projects and that was that. Pantera was done.

I think Damageplan was pretty much just Pantera witha different singer anyway. The Abbots were the soul of both bands.

DtC’s account sounds about right from what I recall, although I didn’t know that they had ever officially disbanded.

From what I read, DtC is correct as well.

To give you an idea of what the club is like, there are only a handfull of security guys there on any given night, and none of them are in between the band and the audience. The stage is only about 5 feet off the ground, and they don’t even pat you down at the doors.

Untill now, these measures weren’t really all that neccesary. Worst thing likely to happen used to be a bar fight. Thanks to that bastard, shows will probably be more expensive and the success of the club will be put in serious jeopardy.

Some day I’m sure that some jackass will shoot someone in a popular local bar, and we’ll have metal detectors everywhere.

The news has finally hit the big metal sites. Blabbermouth has a bunch of reactions from various musicians (thank God Fred Durst was around to draw a comparison to 9/11) and what little is known about the incident.
