Well that just sucks.
Look on the bright side ultra, now he’s able to ride with the cowboys from hell.
Certainly though, that does suck.
Guess I’m not going to that concert at the Villa this weekend. What a shame. What is this world coming to?
I know the music isn’t even close but a friend and I were recently looking at the new Eminem CD’s cover art and liner note photographs when we both wondered aloud “So, how long till some idiot does this?”.
Jesus what a seemingly random act of violence, he will be missed, he was a very good guitarist
Damn. I wonder what was up with that guy who shot everyone.
Good on that cop, though. It saves us from having a long, drawn out trial for some psycho who would have undoubtedly pled insanity for what was obviously a premeditated act.
Pantera trailed only Nirvana in my mind as the band of the '90s. Darrell will be missed. I read that his brother, Vinnie Paul, was also shot. I hope he makes it.
I am just stunned. Great guitarist, seemingly senseless violence.
Man, first time I’ve been about to cry over an artist death since SRV. I lived in Dallas in Pantera’s heydey (only a few blocks from The Basement where they filmed their Headbanger’s Ball episode) and have seen them several times. Got almost all the albums (even stuff like Power Metal). I’m completely at a loss for words. For over a decade the brothers Abbot defined metal. I was in Dallas when SRV died and it was like the entire city had the air punched out of them, dark and a sense of utter loss. Texas, as a nation, mourned the loss of one of our sons. I hoped to never feel that way again. History repeats itself.
I’m rambling.
Wow…
I used to cover Pantera songs in one of my bands. He was a great, natural guitarist- a very cool riffing style. It was fun to play his stuff.
I hope his brother makes it and kudos to that police officer.
Was just howling along to Vulgar Display of Power last night. Damn. Those fast, percussive riffs… he was one of my favorites. Damn.
This is just terrible. I was a big fan in high school, haven’t thought much about them since then.
This doesn’t bode well for the intense amount of security that may now be required at concerts from here on in. Where the hell were the yellow-shirted bastards last night? If I ever even thought about jumping on stage at any of the concerts I’d been to, somebody would have put me in the hurt locker.
I’m predicting this idiot left a note someplace. We’ll see.
The more I think about it, the more I think it was some dillhole who was upset that Pantera broke up. That was not a pleasant breakup by any stretch of the imagination, and as always there were two sides, the pro-Phil side, and the rest of them.
Whether I’m right about it or not, I think it’s safe to say that people take music/movies/sports too seriously, in some cases seriously enough to kill. I mean, I take football seriously, but Jesus, man, I’d never kill anyone over it.
What the hell is wrong with these people?
As I was driving my daughter to school this morning I heard a report on the radio that the shooter’s first words to Dimebag when he got on stage were, “How dare you break up Pantera?”   :wally
That doesn’t explain why he opened up on the crowd, though.
This is so terrible. This really is a horrible, horrible thing. Two musicians dead, two fans, it’s a nightmare.
I’ve loved Pantera and their various side projects for as long as I can remember. Despite the tensions between Phil and Darrell, I don’t think anyone could have predicted something like this.
Oh, man. I knew Darrell, Vinnie, and Phil tangientally from the DFW music scene, they were really cool about coming out and seeing upcoming bands and unknown band’s shows. Really nice and supportive guys. I can’t believe anyone would do Darrell harm, he was a real regular joe to everybody. Absolutely awful.
I’m not into metal anymore really but Pantera was my favorite band in high school. I was visiting my parents’ house not long ago and grabbed a Pantera cd out of my old stuff just for nostalgia value.
Just last night I was wearing my Pantera jersey I got when I saw them at Ozzfest in 1997. One of the craziest shows I’ve ever seen by far. I had all their CDs up to TGSTK, including their live CDs, their stuff before Vulgar Display, and their home movies.
Dimebag will be missed
Damn, I missed that part. Vinnie Paul’s the best. I always liked Darrell because he was a guitar player with really good, precise rhythm. Damn…
According to this thread in the pit, Vinnie is alive and uninjured.
From what I’ve read, at least one and possibly two of them were killed in the shooting as well. Say what you will about overzealous bouncer types, but jumping an armed assailent when you are unarmed(which is what they reportedly did) takes stones. Vaya con Dios, amigo.
