Pantone RGB Equiv

Can someone explain what the “U” after Pantone colors represents? For example; I am trying to match “Pantone 490 U” in MS Office. This site (page 32) has Pantone equivalents, but when I plug those numbers into the PowerPoint custom color selector it comes out almost black. In contrast, this site’s RGB equivalent for 490 without the “U” seems pretty close.

U means uncoated. That’s what the color will look like if it’s printed on uncoated paper stock instead of a glossy, coated stock.

FYI, when you link to a file that may be client-side resource intensive, such as .pdf, .doc and the like, it is appreciated if you provide a warning to that effect.

Sorry about that, will do in future.

OK, that makes sense. I printed to “color inkjet paper”, which though not glossy, is presumably coated.
