I can upon this editorial about the proposed National ID. It all seems like right wing paranoia, but what’s the straight dope on it?

The whack-factor seems pretty high on the article you cite, but there are plenty of people who aren’t nuts calling for a national ID:

I’m not sure of your General Question here.

But having dealt with National Guard checkpoints in the past few weeks, I can assure you that the “article” is factually incorrect on several points.

These were standard-issue National Guardsmen and women, kids really. No special training at any weird school. No one called me “citizen.” They accepted utility bills, mail, and anything else that demonstrated that people had a reason for passing the checkpoints. And the area covered by the checkpoints shrank each and every day as services were restored.

That’s one of the biggest crocks of s*** I’ve ever read in my life. And believe me, I have read a lot.
