On a whim, having been reading Part 3 (“Red River to Appomattox”) of Shelby Foote’s “The Civil War”, I arranged myself a trip to Chattanooga in September and would be grateful for any suggestions fellow Dopers may have as to what I might do in the 6 days I’m there (24th-29th).
Obviously, I have done some research. There’s the Civil War stuff, of course - the Battles for Chattanooga Museum and Chickamauga Military Park. And the Incline Railway, Ruby Falls, Rock City and indeed the potentially awful International Towing & Recovery Museum. Being an alleged railwayman, I must also have a spin on the Tennessee Valley Railroad. Pity there hasn’t been a proper Choo-Choo since 1970, though.
Alas, there are no Chattanooga Lookouts games scheduled during my visit.
Please note that I will be wholly reliant on public transport (CARTA) as I actually cannot drive [not unusual for people who live in London], but would be willing to hire a bicycle if necessary/possible. I think I have already ruled out a day trip to Murfreesboro, unfortunately.
I’m getting there on a Greyhound bus from Atlanta: can anyone confirm that there is no public transport available from the bus station or the nearby Metropolitan Airport (Lovell Field) other than a taxi?
Many thanks.
