I know I read about this somewhere, but I can’t remember where. A little while ago, I noticed a new file on my desktop. It’s only identification is the filename “~”. I did not create this file. Does anyone know where it came from?

Yup. It is the result of a bug in a MS patch. You can just delete it or move it to the folder where you keep the address book, which is where it should be.
Another bug in the patch corrupts the key in the registry where Outlook Express keeps the default path to save attachments so, OE will not remember it. This bugged me and I finally devised a way around it which I mentioned in a recent thread. It seems MS patches have more bugs than they fix.
