I am now reading the wonderful Carl books, by Alexandra Day, again, this time for my youngest. His older sister made one of those declarations only a 4-year old can make that the little girl (Madeline) doesn’t have a dad. I don’t recall seeing a father in any of the books, and I am sure the role of Carl would make a ripe thesis, but is this true? Is Sara a single mom?
I clearly recall male legs in Carl’s Christmas. Of course, it could have just been her date.
I want to encourage more parents to leave their children unattended with a large dog for hours at a time…
I’m with DrFidelius on this. I don’t know about her marital status but she is more negligent that the Rugrats parents. And that’s saying a lot.
I only have Carl goes shopping. China Bambina loves this book. I really enjoy taking either the baby or the dog’s part, and making up dialogue. “Hey baby, come on, I want to fart through silk” as the pair of miscreants go up and roll around on the Oriental rugs. Then again, I’m easily amused.
In Carl’s Christmas a man and woman are going out and stop by in the baby’s room.*
On the overleaf (?) i.e. the page inside the front cover, there is an adult man and woman decorating an X-mas tree as Carl watches. Waiting, perhaps, for an opportunity to jump this strange man from behind so that he may once again have THE WOMAN to himself …
*In fact they deliver the only line in the book and perhaps the funniest in all literature to Carl and the baby:
“We’re going to Grandma’s and then to church. Take good care of the baby, Carl”
Carl, apparently the only one with sense, looks justifiably shocked.
Thanks for enlightening me. The Christmas book is the one title in the series that we have not read to our kids.
