Parents Television Council (PTC) Up In Arms Over Dexter and Las Vegas

According to this Hollywood Reporter article the PTC is pissed off that the television show Las Vegas had some shadows of naked women in the season finale (and most likely, series finale) of the show.

In addition, they are calling for advertisers to boycott advertising on the CBS airing of Dexter.

Are these really the worst things to air on broadcast television these days, and are they a danger to our youth? I think I have seen worse on nightly newscasts (in case anybody missed the footage of those cows being forklifted and kicked into a California slaughterhouse).

As a general rule, the PTC is upset about anything that isn’t “Jesus meets the muppets.” And they’re not sure about the muppets.

Is it corrupting our kids in any measurable way? The studies say “no,” but the kids aren’t the point, anyway. They (the PTC) don’t want anybody to watch this stuff; “think of the kids” is just the excuse to get around free speech and censorship issues.

The mother lovin’ sock cutters at the PTC needs to take a freakin’ break.

If only there were a way to filter the entertainment you want so that only material you feel would be appropriate for yourself and your kids would be watched by you and them.

But until humanity develops such a mechanism, we must instead filter out content that we find objectionable from existance.

I was just thinking “well at least they mixed in some of the violence of Dexter with the OMG NAKED SILHOUETTE sex/nudity” they were protesting. It’s bizarre when some titties are deemed more objectionable than brutal violence. But then I thought… wait… there’s sex on Dexter. Maybe that’s what they’re protesting too.

What parents are letting their kids watch Las Vegas and Dexter? They’re both on after my son’s bed time.

I don’t get why people treat television as if it were some sort of public service rather than a business.

The people who put Dexter on CBS didn’t do it hoping to attract school aged children. I don’t watch Dexter (just twice, and I sure wouldn’t watch it on CBS - Is it a half hour show on network TV?) The advertising on Dexter (unless someone is really bad at his or her job) is not aimed at me. If I were to “boycott” it would have zero effect.

I watched the clip in the link. Those girls were just naked. Naked and moving rapidly through lots of obstructions. I’d be less uncomfortable about my son seeing that 2 minutes of television than any routine by NFL cheerleaders. And it’s NOT A KIDS SHOW. I don’t like Las Vegas but my friends and neighbors who do should not be penalized because the PTC folks disapprove of it.

Okay…before posting I thought I’d better read the linked article more thoroughly and I don’t get from it that the PTC are worried about kids seeing ta-tas as much as our general moral fiber eroding. And honestly, there is a part of me that wishes that cursing was less prevalent and sex in movies was more implied than shown*, but I’m not an idiot. Trends don’t work that way. The entertainment industry isn’t going to suddenly collectively decide “you know what? let’s try to get away with LESS!”

I don’t enjoy shows with medical gore or graphically depicted crime scenes. I used to like them, but now in my dotage those images disturb ME. *I * don’t want to see them. So, I watch Food TV, order musicals from Netflix and turn the TV off at 10 and read books. It’s not my place to prevent any of the rest of you from seeing them, or a network from making money.
*as an aside, last night I watched Indiscreet with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. The knowing glances and arched eyebrows they exchanged were absolutely smouldering. Two days ago I watched Little Children. The head to toe completely nude, bright lights no soft focus sex scene between Kate Winslett and Patrick Wilson made me feel more like “oh, hey, you two should be alone. I’m intruding. I’ll just cover my eyes 'til the next scene.”

And it better be “Sermon on the Mount/holding lambs & little children Jesus”, not “Flogged & Crucified or Apocalyptic Kick-Ass Jesus”.

If this inspires a “Jesus vs. Miss Piggy” thread, I’m blaming you.

Now lets say the PTC does get rid of all objectable content on Network TV, so that now we only have marathons of Seventh Heaven on air.

What are they going to do about the internet and cable? Better yet, what are they going to do when their children meet a pesky little thing called reality?

I am so stealing this.

I like your ideas and wish to subscribe to your newsletter. Trouble is, postage has gone from 3 cents to 42 since TV and movies showed sex and romance so enticingly. Sigh.
