Parliament Cigarettes

This is a fairly simple question, but it has bugged me enough to turn to you (the masses) in hope of an answer.

Why do Parliament cigarettes have that recessed filter / extra paper after the filter? I have looked for a website explaining the origin of this, but to no avail.

Back in the days of cigarette advertising, I think I remember something about the smoke cooling in the little chamber (cough) “BULLSHIT” (cough).

There are several threads you can search and pull up on here about that same question. I have read them all and there has been no consensus. I hope your post leads to enlightenment.

Parliament’s advertising jingle:

Only Parliament gives you… extra margin
Parliament gives you… extra margin
The tobaccco’s recessed and made to stay
a neat, clean quarter-inch away.

As already pointed out, Advertising BS.

Heh, well so much for an amazing revelation. Thanks for the help!

I remember an ad for Parliament; it works like a cigarette holder works…or words to that effect.

Slight Hijack;

Until recently, Parliaments came only in Lights, NOT Full Flavor.

why was that?

it makes the filter not get mushy. that’s why i smoke them.

One person I know says it is for coke. Lets you do bumps of it when you have nothing else to use. I am sure thats just an added side bonus to whatever the real reason is.

It was a gimmick. Among other things, it was supposed to prevent the tar and nicotine from staining your teeth and prevent your mouth from coming in contact with the “dirty” filter. It also helps prevent “wet” smokers getting the filter suffused with spittle.

Nasty cough you have there, Kalhoun. Been smokin’?

The filter would not come in contact with your lipstick.

You’re dealing with a different time.

I think they missed the boat by not coming out with a sister brand for Parliament, called Funkadelic cigarettes. Oh well.

Yes, Nametag…sucks to be me (hangs head in shame).

You come out of lurkdom to add that?

Good to see you again.
