parrot discovers the motherlode

So my parrot, dear little Murphy, loves almonds and walnuts. He’s smart, too. He’d learned that when he saw someone bend down to a lower cabinet in the kitchen (which he can see over the bar-divider) and make plasticy rustling noises an almond would soon materialize for him. He would hear these noises and start excitedly doing “the funky chicken” (this rocking-back and forth thing he does) in anticipation of yum-yums.
So I was just toasting a bagel-- he jumps down and starts to run into the kitchen to see what I’m doing. I sit down in living room to play on the internet. I hear chewing noises from the kitchen-- oh, boy, he’s chewing on the cabinetry again. No biggie. After a few minutes I head in there and he has somehow opened the magical cabinet and is sitting IN the cabinet IN the open ziploc bag eating as many almonds as he can. Big rock candy mountain, parrot style.
(I know this happens all the time with dogs and cats, but this still amused me).
Now I’ve moved the nuts but I hear him trying to open the cabinet again. . .

teeheehee! What kind of parrot is Murphy?

Ah, he’s a greater jardine’s – a sort of mid-sized african sort (seizes opportunity to (again?!) post link to Murphy’s web page demonstrating that Capybara either has too much free time or is allocating time poorly while Capybara should be reading for qualifying exams. . .)

Awww. He’s cute! I almost got a Jardine’s, once, but went with a Quaker instead.

The fourth last picture on the second page is really nice

My conure did the exact same thing you describe when he saw signs of treats coming his way. Birds are great aren’t they. They are way underrated as pets. I’ll picka bird over a four legged mammal any day.

HAW!

Murphy’s a cheeky lil’ monkey-errr parrot! :stuck_out_tongue:

Aww! Murphy is the cutest little guy! And it looks like you have a great set-up for him. My mom has an African Grey named Mose, who also enjoys almonds. But his favorite thing is fruit juice- he drinks out of a little tiny cup.

This is sort of shameless, I know, but…any good Murphy stories to share? I love hearing people talk about their pets.
