Partition Magic problem for large HDD

I’ve had Partition Magic 7.0 for a long time, and it did a great job several times on adding, resizing or removing partitions, easily and quickly.

I just got a new computer, running XP Home, with a 250Gb NTFS partition. Before using Laplink to migrate all my setup on the old box, I wanted to make two partitions, the primary 60Gb and the other whatever is left.

So, fired up the program, started the Wizard, and after a couple of steps, it said it could not do that, and would have to use the Operations menu. So, started again using the dropdown Operations menu, but eventually (can’t recall the exact message) it noted that it could not do that large a partition.

I find that the latest version 8.0 is owned by Norton (oh, oh), but could not find any info as to whether it would handle this problem. Unable to find any way to call or email Norton, gave up and went to live Chat (which I hate), and got a guy who seemed to know what he was talking about. After explaining, he gave me a link where I could buy the 8.0.

It turned out to be an Upgrade ver, but they said that would work with my old 7.0. It only cost $30 vs the $70 of the full ver, so went ahead and bought and downloaded it.

I got a confirming email, but it did not give me the serial number, or key, so when installed it, sure enuf, it asked for that. It would not take my old one, but it did give the option to go ahead anyway. I got it installed , opened it, and tried to create a new partition.

Exactly the same thing happened as in the old one: said I had to use the Operations menu. Only this time, that was on the left of the screen, and under it, the option to create a new partition was grayed out. Great!

Gritted my teeth and went and went back to Chat, and got some chap (Chat Chap?) who really had no clue at all what the problem was or what to do about it. He gave me an item number and said to contact Norton. When i told him the reason I was at Chat was that I could find no way to send an inquiry to them, he finally gave me a phone number. Dialing that got me the repeated message “All circuits are busy, please try again” I think all the techies have run for the hills.

I begin to suspect that there may be no way to re-partition a NTFS drive that big with this sort of program. I really hate the idea of starting from scratch and doing the MS fdisk & partition and reloading Win and all the programs.

Anybody know if this size drive can be partitioned with a Partition Magic type program? And how?

Download and make a live disk of GParted to repartition your drive.
Unfortunately you can’t, I don’t think anyway, format to NTFS with it but if you put it in your computer as a slave then XP?Vista will take care of that for you.

Documentation.
You will see that it is intended for Linux systems but the partitioning part is the same for any disc - it just doesn’t care. I have just repartitioned a Packard Bell 500GB HD then installed XP onto it. No problems. Did my own with it too, of course.
