He was “oh! It’s THAT guy” in a ton of TV episodes (Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Fugitive, etc.).
Lots of people will remember him from MAS*H where he played Daniel Webster Tucker, who conspired with Col. Potter to play the ultimate April Fools joke on the 4077th.
But, to me, he’ll always be Bobo Justus from “The Grifters,” one of the most evil villians in movie history. What he does with a sack of oranges is really disturbing!
RIP, Pat!
Rest in peace, Mr. Hendershot.
He wasn’t as old as I thought he was.
Interestingly, he survived a 54-foot fall down an elevator shaft in 1960.
He and Michael Gough (Alfred) were the only two actors to appear in all four of the Batman movies directed by Tim Burton, then Joel Schumacher, but Hingle also played Judge Fenton in 1968’s Hang 'Em High, which starred Clint Eastwood. He and Eastwood were reunited in the 1983 Dirty Harry film Sudden Impact.
He was a very memorable actor.
Hang 'em High is my favorite Pat Hingle performance; he was also great in Splendor in the Grass. 193 movie credits, starting with On the Waterfront.
Several years ago I saw him on Broadway in a revival of 1776. He played Franklin opposite Brent Spiner’s Adams. He was excellent.
I saw that same production, Loach. Agreed – he was marvelous in a role I’d only ever envisioned Howard Da Silva playing.
Certainly I remember him as Daniel Webster Tucker, the ball-busting pal of Col. Potter on MASH*. But to me, I’ll always see Hingle as Norma Rae’s father. I must’ve seen that film a dozen times and his performance always got to me … he played a narrow-minded yet loving father whose life was tragically defined by his horrible place of employment.
Very sorry to see him go.
R.I.P. I watched a few “Gunsmoke” episodes where he filled in as the town’s doctor when the actor who played the regular town doctor was out due to a heart attack. He looked like he was in his 50s then, but now seeing his age at death, he must have been in his mid 40s at the time.
See to hear of his death, just the same. Just watched “Hang 'em High” with him last week too.
