Pat Robertson v. Feminists

I saw a t-shirt advertised the other day that attributed a quote to the Rev. Pat Robertson which was allegedly made at the GOP convention. The quote says, “Feminism encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice withcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.” Can anyone verify that quote or identify a website where I can verify that quote, as well as the year made, and if it was made at the GOP convention?

The quote is on most quote pages. Those that say where it was made mention the 1992 GOP convention.

I haven’t found any verifiable source.

It would appear Robertson never said that at a Republican Party convention, and the t-shirt version is a slightly altered version of what he did say, or rather, write (or at least sign):

This press release from Americans United for Separation of Church and State gives the source as “a fund-raising letter issued during a campaign to defeat an equal rights amendment in Iowa”; this web page gives the same wording, and gives the source as a “Fundraising letter from PAT ROBERTSON that was an in-kind contribution to the Iowa Committee to Stop ERA, as reported in THE WASHINGTON POST, August 23, 1993”.

Exact-phrase searches on various portions of Robertson’s statement in the archives of the Washington Post for 1993 all get hits for an article by Judy Mann from October 20, 1993 on page E15 entitled “The Choice in Virginia”, if someone wants to shell out a small fee to verify. (I’m not sure why the section listing for the article is “Food”, though. Odd.)

Shh! Careful with noising about that kind of quote! If december sees it, he’ll use it as fodder for yet another Great Debates thread.
