His son, Patrick Ewing Jr. was an assistant at Georgetown last year. Jr. coached for John Thompson III. It’ll be interesting to see if Dad keeps him employed.
The Big East has several ex players coaching their alma mater’s. Chris Mullin at St John’s, Ewing at Georgetown and Shaheen Holloway at Seton Hall (asst coach).
Ewing has solid assistant coaching experience in the NBA. I’m looking forward to seeing what he accomplishes at Georgetown.
Very happy to hear that Patrick is going to try and rebuild the program. I knew very little about his assistant coach work, but everyone seems to think he’s a diligent and thoughtful guy, not someone who is coasting on his fame, so I’m expecting him to do a good job. The x’s and o’s shouldn’t be a problem at all for him.
I’m superstitiously concerned. This reminds me of Wes Unseld being chosen as coach of the Wizards as a sentimental loyalty pick. It worked out badly, but letting him go was painful and extra difficult because of his great history.
The difference between Ewing and most honorary alumni coaching appointments is that Ewing has been as assistant coach for 15 years. He hasn’t been an analyst or front office guy. He’s been on the sideline. Granted, that 15 years of coaching experience is in the NBA, so there will be some adjustment. But you’d hope Patrick Ewing would be able to recruit.
