Duke gets clobbered

Nice work, Ohio State! I so dearly loathe the Blue Devils. I only wish that I hadn’t been too busy working to actually pay much attention to the game.

I hate Puke too, but I hate Ohio St. more. I was hoping they both could lose. As an Illini fan, it’s very difficult to see Ohio St. perform that well. But they’re legit. I was skeptical until last night. Their big 4 dominated, shooting 60% and shutting down the Dukies.

<deep, depressing sigh>

It’s a reloading year for Duke. They’ll take their lumps but probably still be no worse than a #3 seed in the NCAA tournament. Such is a down year at Duke.

I also hate Ohio State, but they are for real. They returned most of their key players. As for Duke, hey, Austin Rivers is really good.

Given that the Blue Devils made a fairly credible run at going undefeated last season, I’m thankful that they absorbed a loss pretty quickly and I don’t have to deal with all that again. (I work in sports at a group of papers in North Carolina, so I can’t exactly ignore something like that.)

So, they’re the Deacon Blue Devils now?

Speaking as a fan since 1967 of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels
(BA class of 1971) I admire our great rivals from Duke, and I am happy to
see their class program beat everyone else except for us.

I am disturbed by the vicious commenary made by others here, others who
take pride in hatred, as though hatred were a virtue, something to brag about.
It was not like that 40+ years ago.

That’s because 40 years ago Duke was in the middle of a decade+ of futility.

You are out of your depth here, Bootsie: Duke made the F2 in 1978,
and it was a top-20 team my freshman year, when we lost to them
in triple OT at Duke. The season before we had somehow beat them
three times (when they were also a top-20 team). I do not think we
have beat them three times in one season since.

From '68-'77, ie, +/- 40 years ago, Duke was very mediocre, which is why no one hated Duke then, not because people somehow had more moral fibre or whatever back then. I disagree the habit of hating your college rivals a new phenomenon, or some sort of indication of said lack of moral fibre

My earlier posts were not all that difficult to understand. Please pay better attention to what you are replying to:
(from reply #7):

(from reply #9):

Duke was 10th in the 1968 final AP poll. We were 6-5 vs Duke while I was in school,
a period which included a Tar Heel F4 2nd, a F4 4th, and an NIT Champ.

Even when Duke was winding down its own great streak of tournament successes it was
certainly a threat to win any game it played against anyone else on its schedule.
Eventual F4 Tar Heel teams lost to Duke in conference games in 1968, 1969 and 1972,
so it was not in any decade of futility aganst us!

And BTW Duke was 11th in 1979 and 14th in 1980, besides its 2nd place F4 finish in 1978.

The kind of hatred expressed here may not be felony-level, but it is morally corrupt, and i am sorry to see you embrace it. It did not exist in my college experience.

The “morally corrupt hatred” expressed here consists of “I loathe the blue devils and am happy they got crushed” and calling them puke instead of duke. People didn’t act like this in the glory days when you were in college you say? I don’t believe you.

Relax. I don’t really hate anything (or anyone) here. It’s just an expression indicating I’d prefer a team to lose because they are either in direct competition with a team I like, or win very frequently.

This is such a laughably absurd statement that it makes me believe your perspective here is really skewed.

I don’t care what you believe.

I did not act like this 1967-71, and I did not see anyone else act like it. The worst
I ever saw or heard 1967-71 was “Dook”.

BTW I limited my objection to the word “hate”; “loathe” is close enough, but “puke”
is not, and hoping a rival loses is not.

While in college I myself did not care if Duke won or lost as long as we beat them.
I only developed a genuine affection for the team during their great run to the F4
in 1978. I was assisted in this change of attitude by a then-recent aquaintance, a
Duke graduate and fan, who wholeheartedly rooted for us in 1976-77. He even went
to Atlanta for that year’s F4 (where we lost in the championship game to Marquette)
to try to wrangle tickets and watch in person. The world needs more people like
him and less people like the morally deformed hate squad who showed up for thread.

No use trying to convince someone like you of the virtue of good sportsmanship.

Wow, moral elitists who declare superiority over people based purely on something as trivial as college basketball schadenfreude are worse for the world IMO.

If you consider adjuring hatred to be a form of elitism then you got problems,
big problems.

Of all vices of misdemeanor level or less I am guilty of maybe half, including,
occasionally, a spell of schadenfreude. Schedenfreude is not a form of hatred, however.

You’re demonstrating some pretty poor sportsmanship yourself. So, yeah, it is futile for you to attempt to convince others of the concept of good sportsmanship.

No, the moral elitism I was referring to was declaring people to be a “morally deformed hate squad” that the world needs less of, based on nothing more than a handful of comments stating only that they hate a college basketball team.

Looking back at the comments in this thread, there isn’t even one comment that one could reasonably be considered “vicious”.
The OP says he loathes the Blue Devils.
The next guy calls them Puke and hates both teams, but still compliments the team he dislikes more
One guy says its a reloading year for Duke, but they’ll still be good, One says Austin Rivers is good, one says hes glad Duke won’t have an undefeated season, and one jokes the could be called the Deacon Blues.
As far as morally deformed hate squads go, this one’s about as good as Duke was against Ohio State.
