Patrick O'Brian-The Commodore

How old is Mr. Reade?
What became of Lt. Oakes?

  1. Age is just a concept.

  2. Sucked into an anomaly.
I haven’t gotten that far in the series yet.

ha!
The Surgeon’s Mate through THe Commodore take place in the repeating year 1814, so Mr. Reade indeed goes from:

Little Reade, the midshipman of the watch, skipped aft to the rail,

to commanding Ringle
in a time warp.

He becomes “poor Mr. Oakes” and Clarissa becomes an unencumbered woman. By implication, he seems to have died in a not particularly interesting way (well, not interesting to people other then himself). POB sometimes killed people off in this manner which is contrary to our narrative expectations but is just how life does it. Like the casual way that you-know-who gets killed in The Hundred Days

I was thinking I missed some action where he copped it.
