I did not know beans about Shakespeare’s RICHARD II until the Friday
night PBS presentation of “The Hollow Crown.”. Patrick Stewart appeared
in Italian Renaissance draped clothing as did others. So this was court
attire 100 years before Bosworth! Stewart delivered the famous speech
about “This sceptred isle, this England” in almost a whisper…
I did not have a clue about the rest of the cast, except the youth who
darted poor abdicated Richard II in the Tower seemed to be the same fellow who plays QC Martha Costello’s pupil in SILK.
Stewart didn’t disgrace himself. But of course the most direct comparison for some viewers would have been John Gielgud’s John of Gaunt (in the BBC Shakespeare film, which starred Derek Jacobi as Richard II).
