Somewhere in Indiana, Mark Souder is taking notes. Look for a comeback from “Big Boy” if this works out for Newt.
Right. So the marriage starts going to shit because one or both spouses is dedicated to his or her career and then begins feeling lonely and/or depressed. Then some hottie comes along and tells you how much she understands you. Adultery ensues.
Now, I don’t want to interrupt the piling on of Newt, and I fully admit that it was stupid thing to say, and yes it was hypocritical given what he did to Clinton, etc.
But, I at least understand the logic behind it.
+1.

Newt was a reputed horndog when he was a congressman. If you believe he has had 2 affairs in his life you are dreaming. He was Clinton but he did not get caught.
Is a “reguge” where people go to regugitate?
They’d probably never say this, but I think a defense might be that they’re not asking to make adultery legal. They think both things are wrong (the gay and the extramarital fucking), although they’ve committed one of the sins. Also, I guess if you’re Catholic, you continue to sin without any intention of fixing it if you are on your 2nd or 3rd or 4th marriage without ‘annulment.’
You know, I don’t know what they’d say. Still, in the one case it’s “I’ve done this thing that was, you know, some inappropriate things were happened while I was there,” where the other is saying being gay isn’t wrong, in fact, it’s as good as Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed.
He was asked about this hypocrisy a couple of weeks ago at the University of Pennsylvania. He replied, “I’ll bet almost everybody here can gather the thrust of your question. I appreciate the delicacy and generosity in the way it was framed. I hope you feel better about yourself. I’ve had a life which, on occasion, has had problems. I believe in a forgiving God, and the American people will have to decide whether [that’s] their primary concern. If the primary concern of the American people is my past, my candidacy would be irrelevant. If the primary concern of the American people is the future that’s a debate I’ll be happy to have with your candidate or any other candidate if I decide to run.”
Nice response. First he chastises her for asking a direct question about a legitimate issue (as if it’s rude to even bring it up) and then neatly sidesteps it.
He also went with the “God forgave me,” and “it’s in the past.” No accountability at all, and an implication that questioning his honesty and character is somehow devious and dishonest in itself. Classic narcissist. Watching him go head to head with Palin would be interesting.
Give it up Newt. If someone like me who mostly agrees with you on policy won’t vote for you, I kind of doubt that you have any chance on being president.
Actually you’re kind of a scumbag, just go away. Actions have consequences, you don’t get to have a do- over especially in politics.
His fatal mistake is playing religious conservatives for suckers with his newfound conversion. I think he might not realize that most of them really do take marital fidelity seriously, actually do have moral opinions about how he dumped his wives and are perfectly capable of recognizing a fake conversion when they see one. I’ve heard righties who are totally in Newt’s wheelhouse on political issues tell me that they would never vote for him for President because of his past. I’ve heard them flat out say they think he’s immoral. They believe in redemption, if they sense that it’s since. They weren’t born yesterday, though. This repentance thing is important to them. Newt is making a grievous error if he thinks he can convince them he’s sincere when he isn’t.
Think that’s going to matter to a religious conservative in November?
I’ll give you primaries (wrt pelvic orthodoxy, at least), but he’s probably got a few red capes to wave to help him there…
Sounds like a porn flick I wouldnt watch. There arent many of those.
Didn’t seem to bother them about John McCain, who cheated on the severely injured wife who stood by him when he was a POW and then traded her in for a newer richer model.
Yes, yes it did. Everybody I know here in the Bible Belt who voted for McCain said they were voting for the lesser of two evils. And, of those who actually voted in the primaries, none of them voted for McCain.
If Rush won the primaries, they might vote for him. The problem is that he won’t win the primaries.
BTW, a lot of my socially conservative friends voted for Obama. What I don’t get is why they could see through the Republican crap back then, but two years later could not. I’m guessing it’s because the Democrats just didn’t run an emotionally manipulative campaign this time while the Republicans definitely did.
Appeals to emotion, not logic, win elections.

There again, McCain did. If Charlie Sheen were to win the Republican primary and run against Obama there are tens of millions who would vote for him on general party line principal.
Where can I get a “Character Used To Count” bumper sticker?
He did, but only because there wasn’t a strong alternative. It was a field where all the major playors had severe flaws. Guiliani was pro-choice and pro-gay, so he was out, Huckabee was socially acceptable, but seen as too fiscally liberal, Romney’s conservative credentials were distrusted, and I think the Mormon thing really did hurt him with fundies (though I think they’re starting to get over it). McCain also had the war hero thing going for him, which offset the adutery a little bit, but they still did find his adultery distasteful. They didn’t like it. They were very ambivalent about supporting him, and even in the General they were really voting for Palin.
Newt’s behavior was also worse than McCain’s. Gingrich did it to two wives, not just one, and did it in a meaner way.
McCain also at least didn’t try to gloss his cheating as patriotic. He owned it as bad behavior and his worst mistake. One of the points I was trying to make above is that the religious conservatives are willing to forgive past bad behavior as long as they feel the person is sincerely remorseful and repentant. I think they’re insulted by fake conversions and phony repentance, though.
Same places where you can get McCain’s leftover “Country First” stickers.
Just to reiterate, Giuliani is also an ‘open and notorious’ adulterer too.
And IIRC, there has been some controversy of late about him being offered communion despite his sordid history.
Aw hell. I’D vote for Sheen. Some opportunities, no matter how risky, must not be passed up!
War on terror? WINNING!
War on Drugs? WINNING!
We’d be a nation of warlocks with pure tiger’s blood coursing through our fucking veins! How cool would that be?
Dream ticket: Sheen/Walken
