I’m looking to hire a tutor to help me learn Latin. I want to meet with someone in person on a one on one setting a couple times a week. How much should I expect to pay as an hourly rate? If you’ve had experience with this sort of thing let me know what to expect.
Thanks.
(btw the local university doesn’t offer classes at times when I can attend and the local community college doesn’t offer any courses in Latin; also I am trying to learn on my own using books and such but I know I’ll do better with professional instruction)
I tutor on the side, and right now I’ve got a client who pays $55/hour. (I’ve tutored Latin, for AP-level classes in a couple of topics, English as a second language).
It really depends on the experience of your tutor, your tutor’s academic level, and so forth. For example, I get some of my clients through a agency that matches clients with tutors, and they have a sliding scale of wages, based on experience + degree.
Another example: a friend of my mother’s charges between $60 and $75 an hour to tutor mathematics for junior and high school students, and she’s got a booming trade going through word-of-mouth and reputation. (She’s a retired schoolteacher.)
Students at my university charge $10-$15 per hour for various subjects, usually tutoring other students, but that’s always a thought, as well, if you’re watching your budget. Check with your local university to see if they have student-tutors for Latin.
ed to remove too many ‘tutors’.
I agree with **Ms Boods’ ** suggestion. Have a look at the noticeboards in the Classics faculty at the uni. In my experience they’re generally festooned with advertisements from students offering to do private tutoring. You’ll soon get an idea of what the going rate per hour is.
It’ll depend on your location too. When I tutored, I charged between $20-30/hour. I have a bachelor’s degree, and I was tutoring high school students, math usually.

I would expect to pay between 30-50 an hour for a tutor.
I charge kids (well, their parents) 30 an hour when I am at the “afterschool program” once a week per kid. If a parent has two kids that both need tutored in the same thing, I charge 50 (only came up once, though). For the record, I am only completing a BA right now, but I come recommended as an outside tutor by several teachers who know me well (and know I have done well in the past at tutoring). I think the reason I get away with being in college still is that I tutor in a school district that doesn’t have a school-run tutoring (and no university within 30 minutes or so).
