PayPal donations to alleviate the cost of the board

Another board that I frequent carries a small button on each page that says “PayPal”. You click on it, and it gives you the choice of making a donation in $5 increments to the maintenance of the board, which can be billed directly from a bank account or credit card.

Many, many, many privately run boards pay for the entire board this way. Why doesn’t the Chicago Reader open a PayPal account, and put in a tiny bit of code on each page that lets us donate, or not, at our will? This also eliminates people who say “yeah, I’d donate” but never get around to pulling out the ol’ wallet when the hat passes. No muss, no fuss, and the Chicago Reader sees a real return on their investment. Why not at least check it out? Heck, if you wanted, you could make the button an integral part of the registration process, that is, every person who registers must (or is given the option to) make a minimum donation of, hell, $5.

This board is owned by the Chicago Reader, a corporate entity. As such, they cannot accept donations.

But we appreciate the spirit in which this is offered.

What if the board didn’t accept donations, but instead voluntary user fees of a negotiable amount?

User fees may well be a part of our future. You’ll hear about it before it happens.

TubaDiva, that was a sort of cryptic remark, IMO. I hate to keep beating this dead horse, but I have to ask:

  1. Have the old threads been pruned?

  2. Are other actions (e.g., getting rid of sigs) being considered prior to switching to a fee-system?

  3. Is there any idea as to when, if at all, this fee system will be implemented? All I’m looking for here is a) no clue; b) possibly weeks; c) possibly months

This is starting to feel like a train ride I took once. It stopped in the middle of nowhere. We sat there for over a half hour, and I couldn’t believe that no one was giving us any information about why we were stopped, or how long we’d be stopped for. I’m not trying to sound whiny, but I would (respectfully) like to know if there’s a possibility the TM could be kept a little less out of the dark. If I’ve missed an explanatory thread in the past few weeks, feel free to tell me to shut up and point me in the right direction.

I’ve suggested before that the Reader simply set up a non-profit org to run the board. Then there would be no problem accepting donations.

They’d have to pay a lawyer to set up the non-profit, though.

General rule of thumb: If we don’t answer a question, it’s probably because we don’t know. Nobody actually wants us to go to a fee system, so we’re trying anything else we can to make this work. Hopefully, we’ll find a better solution. If not, though, when we think we’ve run out of options (and we’re not even sure how many options we have, yet), then we’ll set up a fee system. We don’t know when, if at all, this will be. Bear with us.

The old threads have not yet been pruned, because we’re currently looking into options that might let us save them. I’m sure that once we get that resolved one way or the other, there’ll be an announcement.
