PC Based RTS Video Games

I was (am) a huge fan of the Command & Conquer series of games, bought ‘em all, finished ‘em all, and loved ‘em all. However, it seems that C&C has come to the end of its rope. Can someone recommend something new for me in that genre?

My computer is not Alienware or anything, but it should have the horsepower to handle almost all new games (I can run GTA III acceptably).

Thanks for the help!

Starcraft.

Seriously though, there’s a new one out that I’m itching to buy: Impossible Creatures, a RTS in which you create your own units by “breeding” two totally disparate animals.

Warcraft III is pretty good, also check out Age of Mythology.

If you want to try something different, get ‘Homeworld’. I did not like the sequel, but I only played the demo, and my main gripe is they ruined the voice acknowledgments (the pilots are all extremely Canadian sounding).

Agree that ‘Age of Mythology’ is good. Have been told that Warcraft 3 is a waste of time, it’s just a prettier version of the same old RTS, with some minor role-playing elements.

I’ve heard that ‘Soldiers of Anarchy’ is pretty good, though different from most RTS games.

If you wait a while, ‘Savage’ might be interesting. In the multiplayer version one player on each team plays as a commander, and they play the game with an RTS interface. The rest of the players play the game as an FPS, taking orders from their commander but not necessarily following them. You draw a box around a few soldiers on the map and then click on a building you want to attack, and each of those players will get a sound cue, an arrow pointing them in the right direction, and a shaft of light shining on the target. You can choose to upgrade players to reward them for accomplishing your objectives, and players who pay attention to orders have the advantage of getting direction from someone who sees the entire battlefield as a big picture (though I believe what the commander can see is limited to the LOS of the structures and the units).

Warcraft III is very good, although it is a bit short.

Age of Mythology is good and has some replay value. Depending on which Gods you choose to worship during development of your settlements, you are awarded different God powers and abilities.

Thanks for the help. Others have said good things about Age of Mythology so I guess I’ll head in that direction.

Let’s see, I’ve got Valentines Day, our anniversary, and my birthday all coming up in the next 2 months. I ought to be able to wrangle a new game out of that somehow.

I have an older title in the Warhammer series. If the more recent games are anything like that one, you might look for Dark Omen and/or Shadow of the Horned Rat.

Hilarious. I’m over at Gamespot checking out Age of Mythology and lo and behold, there’s a new C & C game coming out on Feb. 15. Maybe I’ll get both.

You can find Total Annihilation and it’s add on packs really cheap these days. My roommate and I would pay that for hours on end. Fantastic game.

I’ll second TA (still plenty of downloads available), other older but still good ones are Ground Control and Homeworld. Not right up to date, but both pretty inventive when they came out.

Age of Kings and Empire Earth! Especially if playing against another person.

Empire Earth has Nimitz class carriers launching F-14’s! B-52’s dropping nukes! B-2, F-117’s, nuke attack subs! Nuke missle boats! I love RTS and EE is my favorite. I have the C&C’s, Starcraft, Homeworld Star Trek a
Armada I&II and more.

Homeworld is totaly different, it’s 3D, most RTS are 2D and it’s going for a low price right now. Conquest: Frontier Wars is going ceap now also and It’s quite fun as well.

I still keep going back to Starcraft.

Let me know when someone makes something better.
