I play Mount and Blade Warband a lot, and I find it one of my favourite games. I really like the idea of being able to go from zero to hero, or to villain if I want to, with lots of freedom.
I also like science fiction. I was browsing videogames on sale, when I realized I never saw anything quite like a a sci-fi M&B, but I’d buy it for sure.
What would you want, if you’re a gamer, from a Mount and Blade in space?
Little space helmets for all the horses.
Adamantium horse armor as DLC.
Rocket-propelled horse mounts.

I wouldn’t. I’m pretty much done with the M&B series. I don’t think it ever rose to the level of interactivity that it promised, and the multiplayer stuff is a disjointed ugly mess.
For sandboxy “zero to hero” space games, Elite seems like it might fit your bill.
Actual interesting characters.
You’ll need to track down a beta version of M&B to run it but a Star Wars mod is out there.
Come to think of it, the upcoming Firefly MMO might fit the bill.
Err… isn’t most of the draw mounted combat? Unless you’re riding space prawns or something, an “…in SPAAAAACE” version doesn’t really have much to define it. If it’s the “slowly building an army” part, I’m sure there are lots of examples, but I don’t know the best one.
Yeah, mount and blade shines in its medieval combat i actually wouldn’t want sci fi mount and blade.
In the above mentioned Star Wars total conversion mod, mounted combat takes place on speeder bikes.

Mounted on Ewoks or GTFO.
Warhammer 40K is basically medieval battles with machineguns. Mount & Waaagh!
