I bought a firewire card recently so I could get video off my DV camera (works perfectly, in case you’re interested). However, when installing the card, I noticed that along with the regular two ports on the back of the card that one accesses from outside the PC case, there was another one on the interior edge pointing back in towards the innards of the PC - in other words, now that the card is installed, there’s an extra port on the inside of my PC.
My question is…what on earth is this extra Firewire port for? Am I meant to have plugged it into something? Is it in case I, for some insane reason, feel like plugging in something inside my computer? Not an emergency question, true, but it’s been annoying me for weeks.
(sorry if this is poorly phrased…grammar’s never been a strong point.)
I believe that the internal port is used to add a firewire port to the front of your case. You might have to mod[as in cut] your pc case to handle this. A male to female wire would go from the port to the front of your case and now you don’t have to fiddle with the back of your computer box when you want to use your dv camera.
Ahh, cool. That’s another question I can cross off the big list. I thought it was for power supply for the card, so I was mildly worried. Thanks, Ludicrous!
It could also be used for connecting an internal device that requires a firewire connection instead of AGP or PCI , etc., like a harddrive or some sort of data transfer device. Not sure either. I`ve seen computers advertised with internal USB also - probably for the same reasons.
