PC upgrade for dummies web site?

Background info: I got a Gateway in 1998 that is finally getting kinda long in the tooth - Pentium II processor, 250 MHz, RAM is 96.

I’m thinking that it’s time for an upgrade - Pentium 4, kick the RAM up.

There. Now you know as much as I do.

Looking for a web site that can tell me what I need to find out, what I need to get, and what I need to do. Preferrably written in a way that’s accessible if you don’t have any background knowledge, but you’re reasonably smart and you like to learn stuff. Googling on this hasn’t done much good… I’ve learned a lot about where I can buy motherboards and CPUs.

Failing that, what would be the fastest way to learn?

Or should I just fuhgeddaboutit and buy a new pooter?

Today’s computer rate, at Dell.com :
“Dimension 4550 P4-2Ghz, 128MB DDR/30GB XP Home, MS Works $559 - $100 rebate = $459 shipped free. $409 if you buy 2!”
(thats from techbargains.com)

Seems better to buy one already made cause a 2 or 2.4ghz processor is gonna be around $200, operating system $150…Etc see how you save today buying premade?
