PCs are shit. Macs rule. I get it now.

First, let me say that I don’t want to start a Mac vs PC war. Quite the opposite. If you have an opinion on the subject, please keep it to yourself. Seriously, whatever works for you is what’s best. For you.

Second, I don’t mean to trash my boss. He’s really a pretty cool guy.

Except when it comes to proseletizing for his Mac religion. Every other day he comes into this office to talk about something work related, and every time he does, he has to make some comment about how Macs are the best invention since oral sex, while PCs just suck. This is usually tied to some offhand derogatory comment about PC users themselves. Today, for instance, while talking about how Macs are so much easier to set up, he said “Macs are for people who value their time.” What the fuck is that? Saying I don’t value my time? Please. I value it enough to not want to spend another minute listening to your crap.

Yes, I know that you’re friends with a very famous bass player from a very famous band. You’ve told me that a hundred times now. And you’ve told me a hundred times how you convinced said bass player to go into a Mac store with you, and now he’s spent approximately $908,845,356,492,392.99 on cool Mac stuff. Whoopee. You’ve made a convert.

But you know what? I don’t give a rat’s ass. Really, I don’t. And I find your proseletizing actively annoying. I don’t use PCs because I’m stupid, or because I have time to waste, or because I love fiddling with broken sys files. I use them because I like them and because they do what I need them to do. And if you haven’t noticed, only a PC can do the work that you pay me to do. Don’t try to blame that on some personality flaw on my part.

But if you insist on extolling the virtues of the Bestest Compooterz Evar, I say knock yourself out. I’ll even supply the brick.

Oh, I am so with you. I am so tired of hearing I should switch to Mac. Excuse me? I *like * my computer, thankyouverymuch. There are legitimate reasons to buy a PC.

Retort - “PCs are for people who value their money.”

Yep. And the war over which is better is really just so childish.

Yes it is, and I use both. There really isn’t THAT much of a difference, really. Your boss sounds like a tool. Consider yourself lucky though, the majority of computer people around me always tell me how horrible Macs are . . . and they’ve never used one! Or if they have, they got frustrated within minutes because it wasn’t JUST LIKE their PCs. Well, duh.

I use both, I like both and the differences are so small that my reasons for using one over the other are for small reasons only. I’m an artist and I do my creative work on my Mac because I like the color matching and the quality of graphics, my technical work and internet usage is mostly on my PC for speed and accuracy.

There are uses for both, pros and cons for both. Anyone who is militant about either is just a big geek with no life beyond their monitors, IMO. It really is a stupid argument.

I use both, too. Mac at work and PC at home. They’re both pieces of shit. There, that should settle it for once and for all! :stuck_out_tongue:

One of these days I’ll open a PC vs Mac thread and I’ll do my darnedest to keep it civil. I’ve used Macs in my time and hated them, and I would really like to know what it is about them that attracts the people who love them. The things that bug me about them are things that absolutely nobody could appreciate. I have to know if these things happen only to me (but on every Mac I’ve ever used) or if there’s some other explanation.

But I guess that thread will turn out something like this:
“Whenever I use a Mac, no matter which Mac, it does X. I find that terribly annoying, don’t you?”
“oh yeah???+ pcs do Y and Z!!11”
“Yes, I understand that PCs have annoying traits as well, but I want to know what you think of behaviour X.”
“bill gates is a fag!!!11 macs rule!!!1”
“I really don’t think the sexual preferences of Bill Gates have any bearing on this discussion.”
“you would cuz ur a micro$oft slave!!!11 so go back to being fucked in the @$$ by bill gates!!!11”

The whole PC vs Mac thing seems to be a subject that people simply cannot be calm about. I don’t know why, it’s right next to “emotional attachment to music” in my list of Things I Just Don’t Get.

For someone who wants a civil discussion, you sure are painting one side with a wide brush. Neither side of this geek argument has the cornerstone on sane, calm, and intelligent.

yellowval, I second your sentiments.

I’m sure the same thing would happen if the roles were reversed, but since it was Macs I wanted to ask about in the thread I was talking about opening, it would be the Mac people who blew up.

No. But the PC side in Priceguy’s example is using Microsoft™ Smart-Quote™ ThreadReader for Business™. In reality the PC user was typing “Die you hippy Mac scum!”, but an animated paperclip wearing a suit and tie popped up and ‘corrected’ it for him into approved, MS™ Corporate-speak™.

Remember; Microsoft™ knows what you want to say/think/do better than you do yourself.
 <-standard “I’m joking, kind of, don’t flame me” disclaimer.

Name dropping is tacky. Teasers about name dropping is worse.

I cannot stand both Macs and PCs. I use only abacuses for my important computational tasks.

You think I’m going to mention the name of the band? Dream on, pal.

Oh, that’s great! I loved it. But in the 2003 office edition, the paperclip was replaced with a happy little puppy! Or so it is on mine . . .

Me too. Macs are fine, but their marketing is annoying. They say “Think different,” but they’re especially targeted toward people who don’t want to think about their computer. And they once marketed a computer because it “comes in colors.” Who cares what color your computer is?

I couldn’t possibly care less what computer anyone uses (I use both at work, and don’t own one because I’d rather spend my time outside). However, the “Macs are so much more expensive” argument isn’t accurate in any broad sense. Sometimes, at a given performance level, the Mac is more expensive. Sometimes, it isn’t. Often, it isn’t.

The cite can be a trip to the online stores of major dealers to do comparisons. Or, a site like this: http://www.systemshootouts.org.

The major exception, of course, is a $300-for-everything Best Buy computer. Apple doesn’t compete in that market, for the obvious reasons. You know the old saw–you get what you pay for.

You summed up my opinion pretty well. I feel this way about anything people feel strongly about. I usually only offer my opinion if asked, otherwise, I say use what is best for you.

Sweet! My favorite band’s bassist is my brother in computing! They made their 2001 album on a Mac, btw.)

Yep, I got a computer that is still running fine five years later. And after subscribing to MSN for a year–and I was in the market for a dialup ISP at the time, anyway–I got a $300 rebate so that POS Best Buy computer was free.

I’ve always preferred Macs, but I find the Mac religionists an embarassment. They’ve got their heads so far up Steve Jobs’ ass they only see the light when he’s chewing the scenerey at a MacWorld convention. Just tell the guy to shove it up his.
