Peanut butter and Jam?

This from the country that invented jellied eels…

No, more like “Makes belief into a beggar.”

Tris

Sure enough. In my book, that’s also know as the only way to make a PB&J.

Wait a minute…

Huh? Do people really put butter on pb&j over the pond? Would that be a pbb&j? Why not throw a nice hunk of spam in there? Or maybe some cucumbers? This has to be a whoosh, right?

If it happens, I must say [pythonvoice]
STOP THAT! That’s very very nasty… and you’re a naughty boy.[/pythonvoice]

Which I also find disgusting. Anyways jellied eels are only eaten darn sarf where posh people live :dubious: .

Us poverty stricken northerners have to get by with our black peas, tripe and cowheel :stuck_out_tongue:

…and whelks.

How on earth did I forget our staple diet?

Brits (and even more Irish) tend to treat butter as the first layer of anything to do with bread.

It’s a default setting, and not seen as a savoury ingredient. When I lived in Dublin I had to shout “No butter. No butter. NO BUTTER. NOBUTTER!!!” when ordering sandwiches as a sandwich without it was deemed incomprehensible by the ladies in the deli making the sandwich. Quite often they’d already buttered the bread despite my protestations and would have to discard the slice. My ex sis-in-law used to spread lots of butter in her sandwich, then mayonnaise.

I personally like butter in a good jam sandwich, or melted on toast, to be followed by marmalade or honey. But not on PB&J, though I suspect this is something many Brits would consider. (And when I was at school my mother once made me a peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich with mayo. Bleaurgh.)

For further clarification, I should also point out that PB&J is hardly ever eaten over here - usually only by Yankophiles like me - hence the OP. So treating it like any-other-sandwich wouldn’t be too unusual.

For even more clarification it wouldn’t be correct to say “Do people really put butter on pb&j over the pond” because we don’t really PB&J.

Mmmmmm! Peanut butter sandwiches!

Good with Jelly, jam, marmalade (especially the really thick bitter kind), any of the preceeding with sliced cheese or sliced cheese and lettuce and mayo (sort of a combo of PBJ and cheese sandwiches - best made with three slices in two separate layers), honey, molasses, bacon, or cheeseburger.

How can you NOT like bacon and maple syrup? Are you sure you tried real maple syrup, not that “pancake syrup” crap that is sold in most stores? Real maple syrup and bacon is food from the Gods! Pancake syrup is food from the devils!

Now I want bacon and syrup!

Jelly has a lighter and more pleasing texture than jam, yet jam is easier to spread without tearing the bread. I have to admit I usually go with the jam.

Now for the ultimate breakfast meats vs. real maple syrup competition, I put crumbled bacon in the pancake batter, and then serve sausage patties on the side.

Bacon and maple is quite nice. I sometimes buy maple-smoked bacon for that reason, so it’s already got some nice mapley flavour to it. (Great when you’re having eggs and bacon and therefore have no pancakes to demand maple syrup)

Maple baked beans are good, too, particularly in a beans-and-weiners concoction.

You dunkin’ your sausages in that syrup, homeboy?

My personal PB&J is JIF smooth PB on whole wheat bread, with Smuckers or Welches grape jelly. Cut on the diagonal, thankyewverymuch, not up and down.

And the PB&J sandwich making secret is this: You put most of your PB on one slice of bread and then put a very thin layer on the other slice too. After you add the jelly and put the bread slices together, the additional thin layer of PB will keep the jelly from sliding or squishing out of the sandwich.

PB&J sandwiches are definitely American kid food, but I still eat them about twice a week, since I started bringing my lunch to work every day. They also can be an acceptable dinner on a night when you don’t really want to make anything – you know, kind of like a bowl of cereal.

No seriously this has gone to far, way to far!!!

Bacon is for grilling and then slapping on bread followed by a splodge of spicy brown sauce.

It is NOT to be sullied by syrup of any kind whatsoever.

Now then, you must stop that abominable practice immediately.

Do you realise that baby Jesus cries every time you do that :stuck_out_tongue:

erm that’s to with 2 ohs BTW

Wait, what do you Brits consider peanut butter, if not the American creamy version?

-A friend of mine introduced me to peanut butter and chocolate chip sandwhiches. Hehehe…diabetic coma here I come!

Oh, and the peanut butter MUST be Peter Pan.

Peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches. Truly, truly awesome.

heavy sigh I see I have so much to teach you people.

The correct accompaniment for peanut butter is, in fact, bacon.

on white bread. yummy.
