Hi, I set up my new computer at home (Win2k) and wanted to connect it to my sisters (WinXP) over our LAN, whenever I try to access her computer I get a prompt asking me for the Username and Password for her machine but when I enter the needed info it still refuses to give me access and says its the wrong password/username. On the other hand when she tries to access my computer over network she can login with an admin account just fine. I already tried to setup another account for me on the WinXP machine with an own login and password but to no avail.
How can I bring WinXP to let me access her network shares?
I’ve come across this problem before, and the fix for me was to turn off Windows XP’s STUPID “simple file sharing” feature. You’ll find this conveniently (not) placed in the Windows Explorer Tools/Folder Options/View - right down the bottom… “Use Simple File Sharing (recommended)”. Uncheck it and reboot both machines and see where you go.
Don’t forget to create a share on your XP machine - otherwise it will get stymied prompting you for access to C$ or similar.
XP Pro or XP Home? If it’s Home, I couldn’t network XP/WIn2K until I installed NetBEUI on the XP machine. It’s not an option under “My Network”, but it IS on the XP disk. (Or you can use the Win2K version)
I have 4 computers on my network - two XP Home machines, one Win98 machine, and one WinME machine. I want to be able to connect to the hard drive of any of 'em with full read/write access.
When I set up the shares on all the C: drives of all the machines, I give full read/write access to everyone. However, when I connect to the XP machines, I can’t go into any folders except the root, unless I specifically set up a share point on each folder. I looked for the option that Maxxxie suggested, but I don’t see that under tools/folder options/view.
I plugged XP Home into a Me machine it went just fine. Xp asks to make a setup disk, which I let it do. To get themto both see each other completely, it was necessary to set sharing from the roof folder of XP & make sure you name the computers with their own names.
