"penis ensues" and overlords

I have noticed two trends lately. Sometimes, people will say, “penis ensues.” Evidently this is one of those SDMB-isms. Where did it come from? What does it mean? How is it used? Why is it popular?

Another trend is the “I welcome our [insert modifying term or phrase] overlords.” Where did this come from? Why is it popular?

Thanks,

WRS

“Penis ensues” comes from an Anastaseon post where she meant to type “panic ensues” and typed “penis” instead. It’s in the Olestra-phobes thread in MPSIMS and also referenced in her “Is Freud Whispering in My Ear?” thread in the same forum.

“I, for one, welcome our _____ overlords” is a Kent Brockman quote from an old *Simpsons *episode. It’s been cliché for years now.

Can’t help you on the first. I’ve been wondering about it myself. My WAG is that it’s some typo or something that people then adopted, like cow-orker.

The second is a Simpsons reference. [thread=294262]Here you go[/thread].

Hey, my WAG was right!

I, For One, Welcome Our New Cliché-Laden Overlords[/list]

Thanks, guys!

Could you shed some light on the whole “Once. In 19XX. For 60 seconds.” thing that used to pop up?

Seek and ye shall find.

Not Many People Know That…

Or what he said.

Shall we dance, Larry?

I guess we already are!

Thanks, guys!

That thread is hilarious!

Now I feel up-to-date. All of Mordor thanks you.

My apologies to you and others. There’s penis ensuing everywhere. :smack:

  1. I, for one, welcome our new batch of catchphrases.
  2. Penis will definitely ensue.
  3. When you get down to Atlanta, Anastasaeon, you should buy OpalCat a drink – she’s spent six years referenced as the reason for the third item in every list.
  4. When come back, bring new clichés.

Yes, but what does your cat’s breath smell like?

Penis, of course.

Not mine.

I, for one, welcome our new feline overlords whose breath smelled like penis once, in 1960, for twenty minutes. Since they came back, I hope they brought pie. If not we may need to unleash OpalCat on them with a 1920s-style “Death Ray”.

Enjoy,
Steven

Yes, but who did its base belong to?

I thought cow-orker was a Dogbertism from Scott Adams’s newsletter.

Resurrecting an old one that has died out during the Bush43 era:

On AOL we had a member who would make assertions as to the commonness of some custom or usage by beginning his statement: “Manny peoples [say/do/think]…”

This resulted in the creation of a person named Manny Peoples, who would obligingly provide fake cites for people (in lighthearted, non-serious threads, of course).
