I have noticed two trends lately. Sometimes, people will say, “penis ensues.” Evidently this is one of those SDMB-isms. Where did it come from? What does it mean? How is it used? Why is it popular?
Another trend is the “I welcome our [insert modifying term or phrase] overlords.” Where did this come from? Why is it popular?
“Penis ensues” comes from an Anastaseon post where she meant to type “panic ensues” and typed “penis” instead. It’s in the Olestra-phobes thread in MPSIMS and also referenced in her “Is Freud Whispering in My Ear?” thread in the same forum.
“I, for one, welcome our _____ overlords” is a Kent Brockman quote from an old *Simpsons *episode. It’s been cliché for years now.
I, for one, welcome our new batch of catchphrases.
Penis will definitely ensue.
When you get down to Atlanta, Anastasaeon, you should buy OpalCat a drink – she’s spent six years referenced as the reason for the third item in every list.
I, for one, welcome our new feline overlords whose breath smelled like penis once, in 1960, for twenty minutes. Since they came back, I hope they brought pie. If not we may need to unleash OpalCat on them with a 1920s-style “Death Ray”.
Resurrecting an old one that has died out during the Bush43 era:
On AOL we had a member who would make assertions as to the commonness of some custom or usage by beginning his statement: “Manny peoples [say/do/think]…”
This resulted in the creation of a person named Manny Peoples, who would obligingly provide fake cites for people (in lighthearted, non-serious threads, of course).
