Penis Yeast?

can men theoretically develop yeast infections on their own and/or catch them from their sexual partners? where would they get them? [under the foreskin? under the sack? in the rectum?]

Been there, done that. Yes it is possible. And not very pleasant, I might add.

Got mine from Mrs Geek. It’s rare, but it happens.

Yep, they can. It would manifest in the urethra. Symptoms would include itchiness and redness around the glans, burning sensation during urination, and a thick whitish discharge.

Personal experience here, so TMI and whatnot.

When I was maybe twelve or so, I was on antibiotics (for an infection a cat gave me) and I got a yeast infection on my penis. I’m uncircumcised; I can only assume that the glans on an uncircumcised penis has its own little ecosystem like a vagina does. (Women often get yeast infections when they’re on antibiotics.) It was mostly just red and inflamed and quite painful; I used over the counter yeast infection cream to treat it.

It’s called smegma, is it not? Or perhaps the high school joke reference database in my brain is short-circuiting.

I thought about saying it, but refrained from it, in the hopes someone else would. Yes, that is what I heard, too.

Amazon Floozy Goddess hit the nail right on the uh…head, as it were. I had one in High School, and it scared the hell out of me. Now I wear a condom all the time. Got one on now as a matter of fact.

No, smegma is more about sebaceous secretions that could happen anytime (for lubrication). The yeast infection discharge is not the same.

And, FTR, smegma is good for you. It keeps all the skin and mucus membranes there moist and happy, and also has bactericidal effects.

Eww.

Better than having the glans and foreskin dry, chapped, and constantly beset by opportunistic infections.

It’s not rare, it’s pretty common. Candidal balanitis is something I treat about 4 or 5 times a month in my patient population. And generally it doesn’t involve the urethra (much), just a sore glans, along with redness and irritation just proximal to the glans.

Diabetic men get it more often than non-diabetic men.

Note that not all balanitis is caused by yeast (candida). Trichomonas can cause it, as can syphilis, gardnerella, HPV, strep, chemical irritants, and even heart failure.

So is it more common in uncircumcised men?

I’ve seen it more in uncircumcised guys, but any guy who’ll do a ‘turtle’ when flaccid, circumcised or no, would be at higher risk. Warm, dark, moist areas are the most ripe ones for such infections as candidal balanitis.

Be careful when using antibiotics. They are indircriminate killers and kill off freindly and foe bacteria. Everything from yeast infections to digestive disorders can arise because friendly essential bacteria are affected by antibiotics as well.

What do you mean? How should one be careful?

Antibiotics have many different potential interactions and side-effects, and some things that are commonly attributed to antibiotics aren’t really associated with most of them either. What are you recommending?

I just don’t know what to do with that. I’d take it for a sig line, but I’m too chicken.

In the name of all that is holy, tell me you did not get the yeast infection from the cat too.

Maybe

 What? No. I got it from being on antibiotics, or at least that’s my assumption. Makes sense that Candidal balanitis (vocab word for the day, courtesy of our beloved Qadgop) might come from antibiotic use, just as women get Candida in their hoohoo-dillies from antibiotics.

The cat just gave me a big scratch on my arm. It was my grandmother’s cat; the thing was a psycho (the cat; my grandmother is just fine, thanks.)
