Penn & Teller: Fool Us, US run on CW

A thought about the washing machine trick:

I believe the machine was modified in a way that the performer was not actually sloshing around in water 'n suds as it appeared. All we really saw were the soapy suds running down the inside of the small window; perhaps these suds were contained in a small space while appearing to fill the entire compartment?

When he emerged, he did have a big susdy mess on his head and shoulders. He could have had a device to release the glob of soap on his head just before exiting.

The handcuffs, being his own, were completely unimpressive. I like how they tugged at the chains to “prove” the cuffs were real.
mmm

Re: the latest episode (305), the naked fooler was hilarious, especially when Penn removed the screen at the end. Any ideas how he guessed the card? Was there really a taste method? Maybe each color/suit tasted differently so that’s how he was able to narrow it down? Then again, he does unblindfold himself at the end before he announces what the card is, so maybe there’s something else to it.

I suspect he really does have the cards treated with something to at least narrow it down to suit by taste. I don’t think he could reliably differentiate between 52 tastes to identify the specific card, but maybe there’s a texture marking of some kind. The final lick to identify the specific card was, uh, much more thorough. Four tastes to get the suit and 13 different textures to get the rank could conceivably be doable; the tongue is very sensitive to touch.

I think he had a signalling device in the screen but they couldn’t find it. Probably something that vibrates, they couldn’t tell it’s there if it’s not vibrating. It was absolutely hilarious and really impressed P&T. I’ll watch it again, but I don’t recall him denying there was a signalling device.

Yup. He didn’t deny it. I don’t know how that works in the show rules, but P&T didn’t suggest any device in particular, they just asked to examine the screen and then said he fooled them when they didn’t find anything.

I was unimpressed with the egg-in-bag trick, until he let Alyson pull out the egg. The apple with the bite at the end was a nice touch too.

One of their stronger episodes, especially compared to the amateurs from last week. I was impressed with all of the tricks, except for the P&T oldie at the end.

I’m thinking there was some raised marks on the card, though there could be the four basics tastes for each of the four suits. It was a hilarious act; Alison’s reactions were fun. BTW Carrot Top sure is getting old.

Greg Frewin’s reveal/swap was very impressively quick. Has anyone been to his theater?

So how did the egg get into the bag at the end?

It was always in there. That’s why Alyson didn’t notice any change to the weight or feel of the bag. The bag has a secret pocket in it. As P&T said, it’s an old, and simple trick, but his time stopping gimmick was very entertaining. I imagine the wooden bowl was able to turn the apple around but the camera cut away from whatever happened.

Indexing can be a whole lot more efficient than that.

Suppose that the cards are “flavoured” in a checkerboard fashion, thusly:
XY
YX

STRIPE A contains the flavours: BANANA STRAWBERRY LEMON PINEAPPLE KIWI

STRIPE B contains the flavours: SALT CHEESE BACON KETCHUP VINEGAR

Normally that would index 25 cards, but if we consider a flavour from stripe A preceding (left-right) a flavour from stripe B that the card is black, and red otherwise, than 50 cards can be indexed (so two cards would have to be missind from the deck – who’d notice?)

Personally, I don’t think that’s how it was done – a radio-controlled vibrating device shoved up his ass would be “safer” (and arguably more probable).

Yeah, hence the “give the bag a shake” (to dislodge it from pocket).

Flavoring the cards is just too chancy. It probably tasted like a carrot anyway

Fooling P&T is a big deal for magicians. If he was willing to get naked on stage I can see him shoving a thumper up his ass.

You can briefly see it rotate when Alyson pulls the egg out for the last time. I really liked the presentation although I saw all the moves pretty clearly. Plus the rotating apple bowl was kinda weird.

Any guesses on where the iPad is hidden? My guess is inbetween the two centres and the curtains hide it. No idea how you would get it in there though. You can also see the drawing Teller does but it’s difficult to make out any details (happens just as Teller stands up)

Naked guy was funny. No guesses on how. Signalling could be possible or taste. Both seem reasonable.

Illusion guy was straight forward but always fun to watch.

Haha, seriously? No wonder he didn’t let Carrot Top shine that flashlight up there.

I wonder if all future magicians on the show will implement this technique? I’d love to see them guess that.

It could be between the two windows in the back. They may not be full circular cut-outs. I’ll look again but I think his hands were only going through the outer halves of the circles. Possibly it can fit in the top or bottom, it’s tricky to judge the dimensions.

I find taste improbable for the naked guy. The card was just tapped on his tongue for the color and suit, too easy to screw that up.

I have already expressed my disdain for most stage magic. That one was unimpressive to me in the execution. But I’m glad you like it, the art shouldn’t die, it should just get better. And we wouldn’t have as many guys taking up magic if not for the hot chick assistants.

Is it just me, or are we getting a lot of magicians who talk, talk, talk, and go through some long, elaborate setups for a trick? I was really bored with the naked guy, which was a long set up for one card trick, whether it was impressive or not. And the first guy with the IPad trick lost me immediately with all the big teeth, hyper smiley patter.
Maybe just me. But I do like seeing Allyson.

She seems to be doing a lot better hosting, as well. She’s still very awkward in the postgame interviews/banter but seems to be getting the hang of it.

I really want to like Allyson but I just don’t think she’s the right person for the job. She seems surprisingly prudish and awkward.

Kind of agree, unfortunately. That definitely was my first reaction. But I still like seeing her, awkwardness and all.

Yes I agree with the iPad trick. How it gets hidden there I dunno. I assume it gets hidden at the first move.

Rewatching the video of the naked guy, his hands are almost always hidden behind the screen. To paraphrase what Penn said, mundane details are important. So if his hands are always hidden behind the screen, there is a reason for them to be there. P&T did suggest a queueing device behind the screen but as others have suggested, maybe it’s build into the screen itself. Entirely possible.

I’m a sucker for stage magic. I know how all the tricks are done, but I still enjoy it.

How about he has someone with a projector backstage? If the far side of the screen were dark, they could just show him the answer and once they turn the projector off, there’s no evidence left on the screen for P&T to see.
