You see, that’s exactly what I’d call “multiple outs”.
That’s the text book definition of multiple outs, so it couldn’t be that unless the backstage consultant was asleep.
Watched it in slo-mo. After Alyson selects a card he does a pair of fake cuts to put the deck back in their original order, then back in the box. I can’t see anything else going on. He appears to be using a psychological force by going very slowly through the deck and watching Alyson very closely, ready to skip to the next card if she starts to say stop. But then he asks her if she wants another one, usual response is no, but she could have said yes. Now if the other cards shown in the album were there at the bottom of the deck then she could have picked any of them, but I would call that multiple outs.
What’s bothering me is that the album was kept in the box. If he was using a force he wouldn’t need to do that. Maybe that and the fake cuts were all to throw off P&T but it takes balls to try to work a psychological force with no multiple outs.
Agreed in all respects, particularly your commentts re: the fake cuts – I had supposed that he controlled the chosen card to the top to palm it or some similar nonsense (if he does this, he does it very well OR the editing hides stuff – I cannot see a card leaving that pack according to the footage).
I assume Penn (despite all the talk of sharp edges and danger, the big screen he gets behind, etc.) is juggling some sort of safely breakable prop bottles rather than real glass ones - no?
I figured they were real. He’s a master juggler.
What is Mac Kings rope trick that Teller can’t figure out?
It’s easy to miss!
In fact Penn names the above trick, it’s called “Three Fly {III}”, and it doesn’t use rigged “coins” it all depends on proper manipulation of the props.
CMC fnord!
I am pretty sure the bottles were real. Penn mentioned in a podcast a few years ago how once one of the bottles broke badly (I think the neck of bottle ended up being cracked) and he ended up cutting himself quite badly
Probably this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmI9uwYzH9o
Penn has told stories on his podcast about cutting himself badly on inconveniently broken bottles.
Once he even had Goudeau, his co-host, glue a bad cut on his thumb together with super glue on air.
Of course, that could all be a performance, but it seemed real, and I don’t think it’s too unbelievebable that he would risk a couple of cuts.
Most magic fascinates me and at least makes me smile. Even rudimentary card tricks. Stuff like this video tho…makes me want to jump for joy. Amazing.
That is one smooth version of the rope trick. Very nice.
Here is Penn juggling bottles in China as part of Penn & Teller’s Magic and Mystery Tour. Seems real enough to me.
:eek::smack:![]()
WOW! That version puts others to shame. And all this time I thought Mac was 90% comedian and 10% magician.
He really is a great magician. Guys like Amazing Johnathan and The Great Ballentine were 90% comedian, even more at times, and very entertaining. Mac is in a league of his own.
He will definitely be back on the show to perform that one. That’s pretty damn crazy. The only thing missing is him eating the rope and pulling it out of his bum.
Thanks for sharing that; that rope trick is amazing.
I watch this show with my mother and she insists I ask what other people think about the fact that Alyson wears the exact same dress every show (it didn’t even occur to me until she pointed it out)…
Ask her what she thinks about the fact that Jonathan wore the same suit for every show. ![]()
They shoot multiple episodes in a day, so they don’t do a wardrobe change between each one.
They also are freed up to edit in tricks from one show into another. Penn and Teller are wearing the same clothes as well.
They actually do film the episodes straight through, but if one trick needs to be moved/eliminated, they do have the ability to do a little editing and include another. They film more than the minimum required in order to ensure they have enough for the show.
I did notice P&T wore the same grey suit every episode, couldn’t remember about Jonathan. I also surmised they shot at least some episodes together in a bunch, but didn’t think about editing the tricks around.
Though, that brings up another thought… if they film more than required, how bad must some of them have been that we ended up with some of those guys in episode 3?
Does explain how we usually get one “Fool Us” per episode though.
They actually do try to air them as they recorded them. You can here Allyson say, “We’ve had one fooler tonight, will we get two?” and so forth. They just film a few extra tricks in case anything goes wrong with a trick.
The magicians do everything you see live, with no re-dos for failure or anything. If they screw up a trick, they can cut them out and use another.
Penn and Teller have zero inside info. and only find out who is coming out the moment the video plays in the theater. That’s why when Kostya Kimalat was announced last year, Teller leaned over to Penn and said, “We’re through.” He was write. Kimalat blew them away more than any other trick they’ve seen.
