I have no take on this, I just wanted to open this up for discussion. On the surface it sounds disdheartening, although no one is 100% sure that this scenario will ever come to pass. Would some of you dopers out there share your thoughts on this?
Well to me this is old news. I’ve known about the Convection Current’s fragility in the far north for a long time now, and that Global Warming ironically will lead to an Ice Age unless a few (not very accepted) scientists prove that the Ice Age was caused only because of atmospheric conditions.
Basically that movie, “The Day After Tomorrow” will go through the worst case senarios…but it is not like “The Core” or any other crappy disaster movie.
This is a very serious possibility that could happen any time a large enough source of fresh water hits the Gulf Stream.
But there is nothing we can do about it, since we aren’t causing global warming.
Alittle info on that “conveyor belt” called the Thermohaline current
Wrong on both counts, Broken Column. Where are you getting your information? There’s a decent possibility we can do something about it, and we are causing it. But don’t believe me, believe the current scientific consensus.
Indeed, a discussion of that consensus is in this thread (which Broken Column also made a contribution of similar value to).
That’s the kind of discussion I was hoping for. Consider this thread closed.
