People "boycotting" New Star Wars Film on Racial Grounds

If the trolling douchebags don’t want to be mistaken for genuine douchebags, then the onus is on them to make the distinction clear. I see no reason to give them the benefit of the doubt. It’s not like pretend douchebags are any less tiresome than sincere douchebags. Who cares if the douchebags are only spreading douchitude because they find it amusing? Their motives are irrelevant. Fake douchebags are still contributing to the ambient douchebaggery of the world. They’re making the world a more douchebaggy place. You know what that makes them? That’s right - of course you do.

I don’t like Ewoks. Does that make me a racist?

What’s a nubian?

People need to understand that these morons at [that other place] are not above anything. They posted a thread about how to make your iPhone waterproof and posted pics of some small print guaranty by iPhone that the phone was waterproof. You know what happened next.

They also posted some instructions on making something cool that required blending 2 household chemicals together. (which, for safety, I won’t mention) Fortunately, a rather knowledgeable reader posted WARNING in the thread and hopefully kept the followers from experimenting and harming themself.

And those a-holes call this shit “pranks.”

This makes you appreciate the SDMB all the more.

Which I do, to a somewhat more substantive degree, since last night.

I will be boycotting the new Star Wars movie, but not because of some supposed racism.

I will boycott the movie because of George Lucas.

You know he has nothing to do with the new movie, right?

It’s hard to get rid of the Gungan stank.

Are you crazy?! 4Chan are doing God’s work. People need to be educated to not blindly trust whatever goes for news and media organisations these days or whatever stupid thing some anonymous dude on the internet says. If the only way to educate them is to make them look like fucking idiots then so be it. Rhombus consider yourself educated. 4Chan are fighting ignorance. It’s like an edgier version of The Onion, and if a news station mistakenly takes a 4Chan or Onion story for the truth it’s not worthy of being called a news station.

The bastard sold the franchise to Disney for $ 4 billion which he’ll donate to some stupid educational cause. Such a shitty move when he could have spent it on a lavish residence in Switzerland or a fleet of private jumbo jets. Fucking Lukas man.

This part is true.

It hasn’t been convincingly demonstrated that this is in fact the only way to educate people.

If by “edgy” you mean “deliberately trying to get people to believe false information instead of publishing clearly-identified fake news as a form of satire”, then yeah.

In the same way that, say, Fox News is an “edgier” version of the Colbert Report.

A film with a huge target demographic of white males not having any white males in it is undeniably racist. I don’t know how anyone could claim that the people pointing that out are somehow themselves racist for making a valid observation. The fact that other movies in the series have had black guys in them has no bearing on that, as obviously none of those films were making it a point to exclude white males from any major roles.

Only? Of course not.

Plenty of people and newsorganisations have mistaken The Onion for real news too. I thought it was pretty funny when China’s People’s Daily bought the story that Kim Jong-un had won the “sexiest man alive” award or some such thing.

Where did you get the notion that the new Star Wars film cast doesn’t have any white males in it?

AFAICT from the IMDB cast list for the movie, besides listing white males Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford in the “Starring” category, also includes among the named roles white males Domnhall Gleeson, Andy Serkis, and Adam Driver (along with several other white male actors that you can’t tell are white because they’re inside some kind of robot/alien suit). And that’s if you don’t count the Hispanic actor Oscar Isaac as “white” (he looks about as white as some of the others, imho).

This is a whoosh, right? There are several white males in the movie.

I disagree in this case. I’m happy that I don’t live in a world where a significant number of people would actually boycott this movie because there is a black storm trooper. I’d be significantly more disappointed if this story were true as originally reported.

Then you might want to point that out to the guy who posted this:

True, but not because The Onion was attempting to misrepresent itself as an actual serious news site. Its online masthead explicitly describes it as “a farcical newspaper”.

There’s a difference between publishing explicitly labeled satire that’s so clever it fools some people, and publishing false information presented as real because you’re trying to fool people, even if your ultimate purpose in the latter case is also some form of satire.

There’s Luke, Han, Chewbacca… I see Max von Sydow is in the cast. There are plenty of white guys.

I hadn’t watched the trailer yet and I thought that was what the complaint was in the article, or at least that they weren’t in any of the “major” roles. I’m actually surprised that it looks like Ford, Hamill, and/or Fisher may have more than just short token roles/appearances. I guess the gist of the original complaint though is still that the “major” new roles exclude white guys. I’ll have to go see it for myself (which I do intend to).

I don’t think Chewbacca counts, unless you’re trying to imply something about the hairiness of white guys. Damn racist! :stuck_out_tongue:
