The viewers/readers/listener don’t trust the news media outlets. Your two (2) examples simply aren’t sufficient to change the public’s view of the news media outlets. Your two (2) examples only prove that the news media outlets are still capable of doing a proper job, if/when they are prodded by a disappointed public.

Except that it turns out that viewer/readers/listeners in general do trust mainstream media outlets, when asked about those outlets individually.
Those include ABC, CBS and NBC, all with about two-thirds of the public regarding them as “Credible” or “Very credible” (less than one-quarter consider them “Not too credible” or “not at all credible”). The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and CNN all get positive credibility ratings from over 60% of the public, with Fox, MSNBC and NPR at over 50%. HuffPo is trusted by about 46% of Americans and Breitbart by about 19%.
In fact, it appears that Trump’s hollering about the “dishonest” media has actually increased public support for mainstream news media:

We do need them. They are supposed to be our eyes and ears. However, many members of the public do not trust them. Is that because the news media outlets have been too honest? Too accurate? Too unbiased?
You can demand that the news media outlets do a better job of vetting, and reporting, the news, or you can enjoy the news stories that you are currently being fed. Maybe you don’t object to corrections, apologies, and rewrites as long as you get a new story as quickly as possible. The truth might come out eventually, right?
I find this statement astounding. Limbaugh describes himself as a comedian and often resorts to lies. Maddow is a serious news commentator. Does she lie?
That’s scary. And depressing.
The media are basically chroniclers of change. Change is rarely good news for conservatives. After a while, they blame the messengers. You can shut down the LSM completely and change will keep happening nonetheless.

I just figured out the only possible explanation for the current Trump presidency.

We are all living in the matrix, but there are two different feeds, Red pill or Blue pill.
In the red pill feed: Trump won by a land slide electoral vote, and also the popular vote but bus loads of illegal immigrants were driven to every precinct from Mexico to make appear that he narrowly lost the actual count. His government has had no setbacks and in running like a well oiled machine. As compared the the previous administration run by a Kenyan puppet whose goal was the destruction of America. Under his rule Millions died in the death panel camps, and the economy crumbled to a level unseen since the great depression (23% unemploymnet). There was a massive terrorist attack at bolling green. And all the blacks live in burning war zones where every day is a fight for survival, kill or be killed. Fortunately Frederick Douglas is doing all he can to help them out. Putin is a hero of democracy and human rights, standing as a bulwark against the dictatorial police state known as the EU. And every single Muslim is taught from birth to be a suicide bomber, except for those from countries that have been reformed by the presence of one of Trump’s business interests.
In the Blue pill feed, none of this happened, but there is the problems of global warming, wealth inequality, racism, other environmental destruction which doesn’t exist in the Red Pill world.
Most of the people living in the middle US, including the Editors of Breitbart news, and apparently Doorhinge have taken the red pill. Meanwhile the rest of the world including the major news outlets have taken the Blue pill. Everything would be OK except that there is a glitch in the matrix which allows people from the Red pill universe to communicate with those in the Blue pill universe via electronic media. Hence the confusing state we find ourselves in.
It all makes sense now.
