Yes, this was a despicable thing to do, as well as being totally unnecessary, because there’s more than enough true stuff that’s awful about Trump.

However, I think the conception that Facts should be True is obsolete now. The American people have spoken and, by an electoral-college majority have told us that the truthiness of facts is irrelevant now. The idea that policy should be based on reality is so passé, so 20th-century, that I want to ask OP just what he’s been smoking! 
Just yesterday White House Counsel Kellyanne Conway used the “Bowling Green Massacre” to defend Trump’s anti-Muslim program. There’s never been a Massacre in any place named Bowling Green, you say? Who cares! The truth of our facts is irrelevant in this Brave New World.
In post-rational American politics, whether facts are true or not is of no use or interest. What matters is how inflammatory they are, how loudly the “facts” are shrieked, and whether our finest orators can synchronize them with their bowel activity to increase the facts’ pungency. If the outnumbered rational thinkers are restricted to hunting for “true” facts (where? to a majority of Americans, CNN, NBC, scientific journals, etc. are now lumped with The Onion and Pravda as liars), I’m afraid they may have no chance in the new political environment.
