People who are born gay.

IMO I believe that homosexuality is a state of mind. I am in no way convinced that people are born homosexual. It is not natural, and there is no point in it, from a natural, or reproductive standpoint.

Thoughts?

I don’t think you’ll find too many people here agreeing with you.

There have been observed instances of homosexual behavior in many species of animals besides human, which would suggest to me that there’s nothing un-natural or detrimental about it. Further, there’s no reason why any particular activity that humans engage in must have a specific point. Does jerking off have a point? Lots of species do that as well.

What about heterosexual sex with contraception? That doesn’t result in conception; indeed the entire purpose of contraceptive devices is specifically so people can engage in the pleasurable aspects of sex without the consequence of reproduction. So why is homosexual sex any different?

I think some people are born gay, and some people experiment with it, without necessarily falling off on that side of the horse. I know people who’ve tried it, out of curiosity, and went back to so-called “normal” relationships without a trip…and I also know people who would never consider sex with the opposite sex. I know people who like both.

What turns you on doesn’t have to be constant, nor does it have to “prove” anything. People don’t fit into boxes.

And lots of heterosexual people do things that aren’t “normal.” Depends on what your idea of normal is. What about a hetero guy who likes anal sex? That’s not “normal,” if “normal” means “possibility of procreation.”

Most people have sex the majority of the time because they enjoy it. Not because they’re trying to procreate. If that’s abnormal or not natural…shrug

Call me a freak of nature, then.

Are you a homosexual? If not, then how do you know, and where do you get your assumption from?

I believe this should be in Great Debates.

Also according to Snopes, humans have sex for pleasure, not necessarily to procreate:

I am curious as to why “not natural” is constantly dragged out in homosexuality debates. Eating your young is natural for many species; should we be doing that?

Only if they don’t clean up their rooms.

Hey man, I’ve seen some frightfully awful children; I’m not saying we should adopt an eating our young strategy, but maybe it’s time to start considering it:D .

If you disagree, go to a movie, make sure their are a lot of 13-18 year olds there and then get back to me…

I also wanted to agree with you on the natural thing. Homosexuals are found in nature, right? Therefore they are natural. Or did the OP mean “normal”, if that’s the case, I’m afraid a simple one line sentence isn’t going to be enough to clean up the definition of normal.

Homosexuality occurs naturally in many species other than humans. A search on the board for terms like “gay sheep” or “lesbian seagulls” will probably turn up a number of threads where this point has been made, and supported with citations from authoritative texts …

When you have successfully chosen to gear your brain such that the sight of a handsome man makes you weak in the knees, get back to us.

When you make a conscious decision to get turned on by gay porn, tell us all how you changed your mind.

And when you reach for your privates and decide that you would rather think about your buddies in the shower than your favorite supermodel, let us know how it came out.

Okay?

Nothing is so Neanderthal as the Grunt and Squint Theory of homosexuality. Close your eyes real tight and click your heels together, and you too can wake up gay. Do you really believe that?

Sinful, here is a thought:

Bring evidence of your claims.

A search on “Lesbian seagulls” would probably bring up a lot of Beavis & Butthead links.

I always have heard that there are two ways to become gay: a)Sexual Abuse, and b)Born with it. The truth is no one is sure yet. All they know is other species are documented to be gay, so there is a good chance you really can be born with it.

I guess you could also say being deprived of women (like people in jail) makes you gay, I’m not sure if they’d really be considered gay though.

Or, for the Disney fans:

*You can be gay! You can be gay!
You can be gay! You can be gay!

Soon you’ll flit all around the room
All it takes is faith and lust
But the thing that’s a positive must
Is a little bit of homo dust
The dust is a positive must*

I know what I like, and I know it’s hard-wired in my brain. I can’t decide to like something else. I can’t think of any reason it would be different for gay people.

It looks like the OP starts a bunch of threads and then leaves them, so don’t be surprised if you don’t hear from him/her. http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=327480

I usually find rabid homophobics are trying to hide something, otherwise why would they give a damn? (Wouldn’t a truly hetero guy WANT all other men to be Gay, so he could have all the babes to himself?)

So, Sinful, unless you have some evidence that does not come from the Church of Hatefags, my question is why you are so concerned about the origin of homosexuality.

I personally knew I was Gay when I was about 5 years old…really. That’s the way I am, who I am, and quite happy about it, thank you very much.

So, now lets ask why some people are black.
And then let’s try to figure out why some folks are tall.
And after that is settled, let’s get to the root of the problem why some folks are rabidly obsessed with finding out the “cause” of homosexuality…as if that would change their opinion of the dreaded fag one iota.

Sure, can you give your reasons for feeling that way? Are your opinions just a hunch, or are you basing them on… anything?

I was going to mention something to that effect myself…

If (a) were true, there’d be a lot more gay and lesbian people out there. Most of my female friends have been abused sexually in some fashion, either as children or teenagers. I’m no exception. Why aren’t we all lesbians now? And actually, the only guy I know that’s told me he was sexually assaulted (by another male) was specifically turned off by the idea of a gay encounter because it reminded him of the assault.
