Reading an article about Seinfeld recently, it was pretty clear that he was one of the people I will always think of when I am asked about life in the 1990s.
He’s the TV guy of the decade. Who else captures each decade? Not necessarily a popularity contest, but who captures the decade best (sometimes the same thing):
Here are some categories:
Politician:
Athlete:
TV Star:
Movie Star/Director:
Music Star or Group:
Writer:
Villain:
Newsmaker:
15 Minute of Famer:
My picks:
1970s
Politician: Carter ( this category will also be the US president for me. Carter and malaise go hand in hand)
Athlete: Muhammad Ali. Though he was in decline, he was still the face of the decade.
TV Star: Caroll O’Connor. 70s TV=Archie Bunker/
Movie Star/Director: George Lucas. Because I was born midway through the 70s, most of what I remember about the decade revolves around Star Wars.
Music Star or Group: The BeeGees. Do I need to explain this one?
Writer: Hunter S. Thompson (Peter Benchley was considered)
Villain: Ayatollah Khomeini- Remember when radical islamists were scary?
Newsmaker: Woodward and Bernstein (could be writers of the decade, but it was about more than literary prowess).
15 Minute of Famer: Too young to remember this one.
Fad: Disco
1980s
Politician: Ronald Reagan (tied with Gorbachev)
Athlete: Mary Lou Retton- 1984 Olympics were a big part of the decade.
TV Star: Bill Cosby. There is no other answer than “Bill Cosby.”
Movie Star/Director: Sylvester Stallone. I’ve heard the 80s called the Rambo decade. Spielberg could be placed here as well.
Music Star or Group: Michael Jackson (Madonna is a possibility)
Writer: Tom Wolfe. Bonfire of the Vanities was the ultimate 80s novel.
Villain: Ivan Drago- fictional, yes. But epitomized what Americans feared most.
Newsmaker: Mother Teresa.
15 Minute of Famer: Baby Jessica. The dawn of sensational “journalism.”
Fad: Parachute Pants and leg warmers.
1990s:
Politician: Bill Clinton (plus Hillary)
Athlete: Michael Jordan (is there anyone else?)
TV Star: Jerry Seinfeld (this did give me the idea…)
Movie Star/Director: Tom Hanks (Au-nuld could fit in here as well)
Music Star or Group: Nirvana.
Writer: John Grisham
Villain: OJ Simpson (heh)
Newsmaker: Bill Gates (made nerds cool(ish))
15 Minute of Famer: Kato Kaelin. All-time 15 minute guy.
Fad: Grunge fashion.
2000s:
Politician: Bush (for better or worse)
Athlete: Tiger Woods (with some consideration to Lance Armstrong)
TV Star: James Gandolfini (I had a tough time with this one).
Movie Star/Director: Shrek. Not Mike Myers, but Shrek. The biggest movies these days are steeped in CGI. Why not think of Shrek?
Music Star or Group: Britney Spears. Symbolizes a worthless era in music.
Writer: JK Rowling. Harry Potter mania swept the decade.
Villain: Osama Bin Laden (some will put Bush or Cheney…I just know it!)
Newsmaker: Brinn and Page. The Google guys.
15 Minute of Famer: Star Wars Kid- the 15 minute famers of this decade were all on YouTube.
Fad: Tattoos.
