I find it extraordinarily hard to believe that you could find no cite for the fact that there are non-English speaking children in regular ed classes, and that the schools are teaching on the level of the non-speakers because, despite this being Southern Calfornia and always full of Spanish speakers, there are no ESL classes. And… somehow this is a result of NCLB, as you allege. I feel that your response has adequately proven that you are making shit up and then bitching about it, which is what I suspected. Carry on.

I’ve made it through this whole thread without getting all offended. I’ve had my intelligence, my upbringing, and my genes insulted. I’ve been called a racist. Not nearly so big a piece as you are. As far as I can tell, you’ve absolutely deserved everything thrown your way by Kalhoun, or anyone else.
Selfish motivations are irrelevant. Having children IS the ONLY method by which we continue the species. Just because people have sentimental reasons for doing it doesn’t mean that. People who raise kids DESERVE respect. That doesn’t mean that people who DON’T deserve disrespect.
They are doing it for religious reasons partially. Their religion specifically provides an imperative to populate the Earth. “Be fruitful and multiply.” It’s not lying and sanctimonious to say, “I’m contributing”, my daughter really is a part of the next generation, that’s a fact on the ground not an ideological abstraction. She is a real person just like you and I are. I believe you probably contribute in other ways, whether it’s through your work or whether you are good to your friends or whatever. My contribution isn’t SUPERIOR to yours, but it IS a contribution, and the species would end if I and other parents were not taking on this responsibility. This is a case where there is one right answer and one wrong answer. The right answer is that parents are contributing to the continuation of the species. It’s simply factually correct, and not an ideological statement.
And not having enough kids causes a strain on the community as well. America’s rate of replacement is at a very good ratio. Senior citizens don’t put a strain on services UNLESS there ARE NOT ENOUGH CHILDREN TO SUPPORT THEM. Why is this so difficult to comprehend? Having fewer children doesn’t make it easier to support the Baby Boomers, it makes it HARDER. The economic system we live under is based off of sustained growth. The debt we have grows. The fewer children the greater the debt per capita. The greater the ratio of seniors to young workers the greater the strain seniors put on the economy.
You’re creating a false dichotomy. Loving children and continuing the species are not mutually exclusive. Continuation of the species is largely instinctual, but it doesn’t mean that most of us are unaware that we are continuing the species. If you asked most people they are likely aware of that aspect. It might not be ingrained in how we view sex, conception, pregnancy or birth, but it certainly is ingrained in how we raise our children to be the next generation. We raise our children to be good citizens, to care about their community and hopefully to be happy and skilled contributers. Most parents ARE aware of this, and ARE working on this intentionally. The ones who aren’t…well… God help their children.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with you not having kids. I personally think the US is in an ideal position demographically. I do not think we are overpopulating the Earth yet, but we are damn close to it, and the better we as a species can do to regulate our breeding so that we hover right at replacement rate, the better we will become. It’s pretty fucking amazing that we are even having conversations about this, it’s amazing that birth rates are stabilizing, though some countries are headed for a tragedy, such as Japan, Germany, Poland, China and other nations that are breeding WAY BELOW replacement rate.

My point is that parents who say they aren’t being selfish by having children because we will need workers are full of crap, because we already have more workers than we have decent jobs. And it’s always been that way. But because parents only hear CHILDREN!!! CHILDREN!!! CHILDREN!!! they have to come up with some reason why reproducing wasn’t selfish.
How’s that? Have I insulted all their families? Have I done any name calling or labelling? Have I indicated that I hold any grudge against anyone because their beliefs and opinions are different than my own?
