People You're Suprised To Find Are Voice Actors?

My brother was suprised when we were watching Lilo & Stitch last month and I pointed out that David Ogden Stiers (MASH’s Charles Winchester) was doing the voice of Jumba. He’s also done voices for several other characters.

A couple of people who did early voicework and later became famous as actors were Cheryl Ladd, who did the singing voice of Melanie on Josie & the Pussycats and Tim Mathieson who did the voice of Jonny Quest.

And of course there’s George Clooney’s fine work as the voice of Sparky the gay dog in Southpark.

But to me, the most surprising voice remains Robby Benson doing the voice of the Beast in Beauty and the Beast.

I always thought it was a cool bit of trivia that Jodie Foster did the voice of Pugsley in the Addams Family cartoon series.

Apparently, her role in the voice-over industry has since been taken over by Pamela Segall Adlon, since she does all the same type of voices nowadays.

Cogsworth (and the narrator) in Beauty and the Beast
The Archdeacon in Hunchback of Notre Dame
Some bad guy in Pocohontas (I never saw that one)
A small role in Atlantis
and of course Jumba in Lilo and Stitch

He was also Zandi in the Myst game: Uru.

Harvey Fierstein’s got a fairly distinctive voice, but I still do a double-take whenever he does a cartoon character (Mulan and “Elmo Saves Christmas” being but two eyebrow-raising examples).

From the ranks of the lesser-known voice actors, I remain amazed at the range Scott McNeil has. I’ve seen him at conventions doing five-way conversations with himself, and it boggles the ears…

George Lazenby did a guest voice on Batman Beyond—And Yu Yu Hakusho too, it seems. (!)

I don’t know what he said in Hakusho, but you can be sure that his one signature line turned up in Batman.

Ron Perlman narrated the opening CGs for the Fallout series.

Adding to a couple characters resumes:

Ben Stein had a recurring role on Duckman (Playing Dr Ben Stein).

He’s apparently done several voices on Animaniacs, and has guested on Rugrats, Hercules, Jimmy Neutron, King of the Hill, Family Guy, and Fairly Odd Parents.

Malcolm McDowell played Mad Mod on Teen Titans, and has done video game voice work, as well as doing voices in two upcoming movies (Dinotopia: Curse of the Ruby Sunstone, and Pinnochio 3000), and voices in a pretty good number of TV shows/TV movies - Captain Planet (!!!), Biker Mice From Mars, Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys, Superman: Last Son of Krypton, Wing Commander Academy (same character he played in the WC games). This is just the ones I can confirm are voice work.

Er…actors. I meant actors. >_<

And Tim Curry had one of his many voice roles on Duckman, as the evil King Chicken.

Patrick Warburton is also Joe Swanson on Family Guy and Jerry Seinfeld’s pal Superman.

John Ritter was Clifford the Big Red Dog.

Michael J. Fox has gone into voice work since his Parkinson’s disease has made it hard to do regular roles (try watching Spin City reruns and not looking at his left arm).

The weirdest one I can think of is Michael Clarke Duncan lending his voice to PS2’s SOCOM II: US NAVY SEALS. I thought that voice sounded familiar.

Check out this line up from Spongebob

Ernest Borgnine … Mermaid Man (voice)
Tim Conway … Barnacle Boy (voice)
Brian Doyle-Murray … Flying Dutchman (voice) (as Brian Doyle Murray)
Bill Fagerbakke … Patrick Star (voice)

Bill Fagerbakke was the coach’s assisitant on the TV series Coach

Christopher Judge - Teal’c from Stargate: SG1 - was the voice of Magneto on X-Men: Evolution

Jerry Orbach as the Candlestick in the movie Beauty and the Beast still amazes me, for some reason. He’s Briscoe, for crying out loud! I shouldn’t be surprised because he’s actually a diverse stage actor, and has also done a few musicals (I think he was originally in “Chicago”).

Patrick Warburton, David Puddy from Seinfeld, does the voice of Buzz Lightyear in Disney’s TV show Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. He also voices Kronk in the Disney movie The Emperor’s New Groove. And he’s the P.E. teacher in Kim Possible.

Warburton now does the voice of Brock Sampson in the funny as all heck “Venture Brothers” on Cartoon Network.

As for the mention of Phil Lemarr, I’ve seen his name credited on Family Guy on more than a few occasions.

Kathy Segal of “Married with Children” fame was Leela on “Futurama”

Phil LeMarr also is the voice of Samurai Jack.

And Ricardo Montelban was Gutierrez on Freakazoid (“Laugh weeth me! Laugh!!!”)

Claudia Christian’s live-action career may have been poisoned somewhat because of the fiasco concerning the last season of Babylon 5, but I was surprised to see how much voice work she’s doing for cartoons and video games. Great voice.

Also, although it wasn’t too surprising to see the Kathleen Turner did the voice of Jessica Rabbit (almost the same voice as Claudia, it seems), it was a surprise to find that Amy Irving did the singing for the character…

David Herman (who I knew best as Michael Bolton in Office Space) does many voices for Futurama. Stephen Root (best known as Jimmy James) does Bill’s voice on King of the Hill. Brittany Murphy (best known for her rom-com film roles) does Luanne’s.

Although it’s no surprise that Billy West is a voice actor, I was surprised to find out he did so many voices on Futurama (Farnsworth, Zoidberg, Nixon, Zapp Brannigan, and more). Fry and Stimpy sound so much alike that I had assumed he could only do variations on his regular voice.

Rumor has it that Marcel Marceau did the voice of Snakeeyes on the G.I. Joe cartoon. Holy cow! I would never have recognized him.

HA!
(I feel bad for the people who don’t know enough about pop-culture to understand why this is so funny.)
