Pepsi's Pledge of Allegiance, Sans God

I received an email the other day that claims:

Has anyone seen this can or heard about it? Can anyone verify the existance of such a new design. And, if it does exist, how do feel about the design or the proposed boycott?

I have not seen the can, but have received the glurge in my email. I plan to ignore it totally. This “boycott” is one more example of how the godgoons want to control every aspect of other people’s lives. I find it offensive.

False, according to Snopes. For one, it wasn’t even a Pepsi can. The original complaint concerned the design of a can of Dr. Pepper, which had “one nation . . .indivisible” printed on it. And that was four years ago. More at Who’s a Pepper?, including a picture of the can design.

Thanks so much. I was afraid it sounded so radical that it may actually be true. I would not object myself, but I can just foresee the dust that would fly with this one.

Darn, I was all seet to triple my Pepsi-buying budget just to hork off the ring-wingnuts. :wink:

And I was just about to stop buying products from Pepsi, Frito-Lay, Taco Bell, KFC, and whoever else is part of them. :wink:
Interesting. I haven’t seen that one yet. Amusing, says I.

I think there may have been some Pepsi cans involved & they had several phrases from the Pledge on it. Never was there a Pepsi or Pepsi-brand soda can with the entire Pledge, w/ or w/o “under God”, so it was a major exagerration.

That’s funny because I had the same kind of reflex to up my Pepsi (Mt. Dew specifically) budget.

FriarTed- I think, from the site given by Papermache Prince that it was a Dr. Pepper can some years back that had “One Nation…Indivisible”, supposedly due to space constraints.

Interesting though, how quickly we (myself included) can draw up sides and square our shoulders for conflict. In this case, with out a great deal of provication.
Thanks to everyone, whichever side you lined up on.

What’s with the opposition to retro here? History is good!

And that’s what we’d be talking about, if this BS was actually true. The Pledge as originally constituted (and as it was, until 1954) did not have those two words. It’s a shame our forefathers were such anti-God types, huh? :rolleyes:

Good point. I often tell those opposed to removing the “Under God” that I am only supporting putting it back like it was around the time I was born. They typically look very confused until I explain that this term was added in the mid-fifties, largely due to the “Red Menace” threat of the Godless Commies.
Then they say “Oh? What would it sound like without it?” And when I say it aloud, they look even more puzzled because it sounds right that way also. More so, to my thinking.
For the record, I’d like to say to those who support the phrase being retained, that being an Athist, I personally couldn’t give a crap less one way or the other. My only interest in it is because of those who consider many “Un-American” because they believe this to be the original, patriotic, handed-down-from-our-Forefathers version and will defend to the death their misconception.

No kidding. I’d do the same thing in that situation.

Oh, I remember this email campaign. Someone at work had sent it to me and I asked them politely not to send religious or political-based email to me. Of course, she got offended, it started an office war, she reported my request to my boss, then mysteriously a few weeks later I was laid off. I’m sure that’s not the only reason though; I had a wedding coming up, my grandmother was just diagnosed with breast cancer, the Iraq war had just started - IOW, I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown so the last thing I needed was yet another person shoving their agenda down my throat.

Personally, I thought it was out of line that I got heat because I requested not to have any religious or political-based emails forwarded to me. They obviously thought otherwise.

I don’t believe in boycots. I base a compnay on their product and service only. A company could have religous or political leanings, but not eveyone there thinks the same and I’ve never had anyone refuse my money because I’m a liberal atheist. I just think the email was very tacky.

They were just trying to go back to “Pledge Classic” as opposed to “New Pledge” which just doesn’t taste the same.

That’s funny! :smiley:
I think it goes down easier but others say it leaves a bad taste in their mouth.

Dr. Pepper was invented in Waco, Texas. If you were truly amongst the Elect, this would resolve any such issues.

There have been a lot of bogus emails about non existant Christian persecution being forwarded around the web.
My dear sister and brother in law sent me several that I checked out and found to be fake. I emailed them the facts and asked them to check stuff out before they forwarded it as if factual. I suggested that forwarding false details was akin to bearing false witness {if they believed it and sent it as fact rather than a joke}

I never recieved a comment or other similar emails. Do they check them out or just not forward them to me? I wish more Christians would understand that worshiping Jesus makes honesty and a commitment to the truth a primary concern. That includes not accepting every thing thrown your way. {tossed to and fro by every wind}

In the future, just approach management and IT with concerns about the amount of wasted disk space and time that is being frittered away opening (to say nothing of forwarding) glurge. Leave your concerns about the content out of it and present yourself as a defender of the corporation.

Firefly, I am sorry if I am off base here but I have always asked the question; Is our country any better since we added Under God? As a matter of fact the sixties brought forth the God is dead slogan. I think people unsure of their faith worry that they may not be right and it frightens them.

What ever happened to the good old days when we’d look for the frog on a can of Old Style?

I’m not sure exactly how one would go about measuring such a thing, but I imagine the answer is probably “no”. Probably isn’t any worse, though.
