Perfect Albums

Hi,
I see you’ve found a recording that you like, but I’ve long been partial to the 1975 London Symphony/Andre Previn version. See it here:
http://www.good-music-guide.com/tracks/053.htm

It seems to be generally regarded as an excellent version. I like the pace-- it bugs me when they rush through certain parts in other performances.

Now, then, to be on topic, here’s my list:

Bjork – Debut - I didn’t like “Anchor Song” until I heard it live in concert. Then, I “got” it. Awesome album, what an innovator! Bjork’s a freak, but what talent.
Led Zepplin – IV - What can you say, it’s just cool.
NIN – Broken - Almost forgot how cool this one was until I saw Sm:)e point it out.
Paul Simon – Graceland - I’m surprised to see only one other “vote” for this one.
Rush – Moving Pictures - Totally have to agree with Mars Horizon on that one.

Honorable Mention:
Bjork – Homogenic - “Pluto” is a little grating. I like the “Plaid remix” of “All is Full of Love” better than the original on the album. Those two items keep it from being a “perfect album” in my book, but it’s one of my all-time favorites none the less.
Live – Throwing Copper - It would be a “perfect album” except for that country-western sounding track at the end. I’ve never once listened to that song all the way through. And I’ve had the album since it came out…

As a direct result of this thread, I’m going to check out Delerium – Karma and Tricky – Nearly God… Cool, thanks!

Black Sabbath Masters of Reality

TOOL Sober

Skinny Puppy Mind the Perpetual Intercourse

NIN Pretty Hate Machine

Motörhead Ace of Spades

Peter Gabriel Passion (again…)

Autechre Tri Repetae ++

that’s what I think, anyway…

Patti Smith- Horses

Cowboy Junkies- The Trinity Sessions

a second to The Stone Roses, Ziggy Stardust, Exile, Louder than Bombs and Funhouse.

Turn on the Brights - Interpol
The Sophtware Slump - Grandaddy
The Velvet Underground - Loaded
Urban Hymns - The Verve
Tim - The Replacments

Mike Oldfield: Amarok (only 1 60 minute track!), Ommadawn
Cream: Wheels of Fire (I like 15 minute drum solos!)
Dylan: Second Highway 61, and add Bringing it All Back Home.

For classical, I have a CD of Beethoven’s Ninth performed by the Berlin Symphony, conducted by Leonard Bernstein, and recorded in Berlin just after the fall of the Wall. The emotion in the playing makes this one perfect for me.

Contrabass I love the Andre Previn version, but the CD copy I tried out had too much analog white noise in the background. I like to play Carmina Burana very loud, and the white noise was too annoying. Do you have a remastered version on CD, a good CD remaster of the Aundre Previn version would be excellent.
And as you like Bjork, you must deffinately try Tricky : Nearly God, as the vocals are provided by Bjork on two of the tracks.

I have checked out and in some cases bought about 15 different albums from this thread. And I have moved from having hardly even heard of Jeff Buckley to being a real fan of his works.

Perfect? Oye.

Close To The Edge by Yes.

Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel.

Joshua Tree by U2.

Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road by Elton John.

Turnstiles by Billy Joel.
Cartooniverse

( Yeah, but BippyDrama??? :stuck_out_tongue: )

Scenes From a Memory Dream Theater
Lightbulb Sun Porcupine Tree
Office of Strategic Influence OSI
V Spock’s Beard

The first one that popped into my head was
What’s Goin’ On by Marvin Gaye
35 minutes of pure perfection, and all the songs inform all the others to build up a whole- it wouldn’t be such an amazing album if you removed any of them.
I am also inclined to agree, after further consideration, that Bjork’s Debut doesn’t have a single weak track, but it’s not quite a perfect collection in the way “What’s…” is. No others spring to mind at the moment…

Dylan -Blonde on Blonde

Radiohead - OK Computer

Tool - Aenima

( To sköt:
Sober is not a Tool album. I think you meant undertow.)

Hear, hear!

I’d have to disqualify this because of the “Otter Creek” track. Not one of my favorites.

How about Naked Baby Photos By Ben Folds Five?

The Band- Last Waltz
Dylan- tossup between Blood on the Tracks and Highway 61

Well Cartooniverse I find Jon Anderson’s voice a bit annoying after a while, and he seems to be allways “off with the faries” (not meaning anything homophobic, I mean off with Titania et al.). Also I think I am biassed because Drama was the first YES I noticed ( my Brother being 10 years older than me, meant I was into YES and Black Sabbath by the age of 6 ). Close to The Edge is my favourite YES (with Anderson) album.
Does anyone have a recomendation for the best Beethoven’s 9th

Hmm. I haven’t noticed that problem with my CD. I’ve had it for several years so it isn’t a recent remaster or anything. I have a decent component stereo system so if it were there, it probably would have bothered me. (ie, I’m not listening to a boom-box or anything where you might not notice.) I dunno… What a great performance that is though, eh? Raw when it needs to be, tender in other places.

In 6th grade, I was in a Boys Choir at my middle school. We participated in a performance of Carmina Burana at Boston University. Pretty cool, I’ve liked it ever since. I have yet to participate in a production of it while playing my contrabass though.

Yep, that’s one of the ones I’m going to look into…

Discovering good new music is fun! God knows you can’t rely on the radio to find interesting new stuff these days. Unless you want to “discover” the latest from Britney…

*Spiderland[/I, Slint
Dixie, Avail
Repeater, Fugazi
Surfer Rosa, The Pixies
Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, Pavement

I’ll second Godspeed You Black Emperor, Odelay, Stereolab, Portishead, Cowboy Junkies, Live at Fulsom Prison, Cowboy Junkies. Did anyone mention say Buena Vista Social Club, O Brother, or the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack (I’m serious!) Are soundtracks legit?

:o …I’m an idiot, you are correct. I can’t believe I wrote that!

I should have stuck with my first notion: anything by TOOL
