Perfume as a hobby: anyone else into it?

I’m very new to the craft or art. But I am fascinated by our sense of smell and what wondrous blends we can concoct. Anyone else? Got any good distributor links for supplies or just good advice?

I’m not going to be an aroma therapist or anything like that I just like the idea of making my own scents.

Anyone else?

For fun, folks, not for profit.

I find that I like woody scents with soft floral notes. Most of the perfume I like and use follow along on this scale. I’m really excited about blending my own singular scents!

Mark Serlin might have some opinions for you. That’s probably not what you’re looking for, is it?

I love home concocted perfumes because they are unique. I hate when I have discovered a new commercial perfume and, before the bottle is empty, everyone and their aunt is wearing it! Grumble, grumble, grumble. It’s happened with Pleasures, Cool Water Woman and all the way back to Georgio and Ivoire. I want my man to recognize me in the dark and remember me anytime that he might smell my perfume.
[He’s gone alot for extended periods so I send him reminders of me…on pillowcases, and intimate apparel.]

There’s perfume supplies, info, ideas for lots of other scents besides perfume. You might want to try the Body Shop and Caswel-Massey as well. Crabtree and Evelyn also have essential oils but are for perfume rings and oil difusers.

I love contemporary Egyptian perfume bottles because they are so unusual, but you can’t really keep perfume in these because their aren’t totally opaque; the light alters the perfumes aroma.

I haven’t made any perfumes for a while. What do I like? I like fresh, fresh, fresh aromas like Cool Water Woman, Elysium, Azzaro. When I feel frivalous, I wear In Love Again. Still looking for hot and heavy so I am stuck with Pleasures. So I guess you could say I like: light, non sweet floral, sandalwood and musk.

Let me know how you’re doing - I might just rejoin you!

Try making your own scented oils. Start with almond oil, then soak rosepetals or whatever for days, in the sun, but NOT too hot.

Personally, I prefer the way people smell naturally. No two are the same, and the scent always matches their mood and personality.

HEY BYZ !

I love perfume, and love to use essential oils to mix up my own. Essential oil is distilled from plant material, and “fragrance oils” are synthetics. The true essential oil is always best in it’s complexity.

I have pretty much your tastes in the woodsy/floral range. I love rose, lavender, pikake, violet, and jasmine, and especially ylang ylang. You can temper those high floral notes with a wood, like sandalwood, cedar, myrrh, or rosewood. Patchouli too, but there’s a lot of overpowering hippie-dippie crud out there. You mix a few drops of essential oil with a carrier oil- apricot, almond or grapeseed are good choices.

Colin Ingram makes good bulk essential oils. Others are Aura Cacia, Frontier, and for Sufi oils, Attar Bazaar.

I’ve really enjoyed this over the past few years, and with essential oils, you can get a whole lot of mileage for less $.

A good book to read to get yer senses all in a whirl is Tom Robbins’ Jitterbug Perfume. A plethora of olfactory sensuality. MMMMmmmm!
