Perhaps the mod can inform me of just what I did wrong?

So, my thread about Santa has been shut down by the mod, Cajun Man, with only the following warning:

“Valteron, heed this advice (i.e. give it a rest) if you value your posting privileges.”

Those who called me an “incendiary jerk”, a “racist fuck” a “racist asshole” in the same thread have not, to my knowledge, been reprimanded. Apparently those do not qualify as personal insults. Also, it would seem that Islam is a “race” for some reason.

Give what a rest? Am I posting more than a given limit? Am I posting things that the mod does not like? Since fighting ingnorance is the main mandate of SD, would someone please educate me as to what I have done to merit this threatened banning from SDMB? Something more specific would be appraciated.

I can’t speak for the other moderators who have had to deal with you; I can only say that, if it were in a forum that I monitor, I would certainly be highly critical of those calling you names. Those are clearly personal insults.

Having said that, I also need to note:

Now, I look at the titles of the threads you have started recently:

  • Why does Santa visit Muslim countries — and why is he still alive?
  • Christians pissing on the cross – imagine what would happen in Islam!
  • Christmas is a Christian fraud!

So, first, on the assumption that you really are so naive as to not know what you are doing wrong: do you not see that these are pretty much “false, … inaccurate, abusive, … hateful, [and] harassing”? If you don’t get that, then I’m telling you explicitly that it is so.

Now, second: posting deliberately provocative, inflammatory comments solely for the purpose of rousing up a shit-storm is, under most definitions, trolling. (The alibi of “Muslims shooting Santa was only a joke” will not fly. Hateful stereotyping is hateful stereotyping, regardless of whether disguised as a joke.) We have a very low tolerance for trolling here. You’ve been around for over a year, with 1000 posts, and you pretend not to know this?

You posted a provocative anti-Christian thread in Great Debates, posing nothing to debate. You’ve posted two inflammatory anti-Muslim threads in MPSIMS, neither of which presents anything that I’d call “stuff to share.” I, and the other mods, see this behavior as reckless, inflammatory, and provocative and borderline trolling. You have therefore been advised to cool it.

And, don’t start whining that we’re censoring your freedom of speech. There are ways to pose the same material that are legitimate and do not fall in the “trolling” category. Your word choice is (partly) what elicits strong response.

Finally, complaints about Moderator actions belong in the Pit, not here. However, I will leave it to the Moderators of this forum to decide whether to move it or close it or leave it where it is.

From now on, I will adhere to the double standard. Atheism can be shit on left right and centre. I can be abused and called a “racist fuck” with impunity. But religion must be shown respect.

I don’t know whay I exepected SDMB to be different from anywhere else.

I’m late to the party, but can I get a link to these threads? I’m curious to see what all the hubbub is about and to see if I, also an athiest, can tease what’s inflammatory out of it.

Funny thing about my thread in GD about the Christian Fraud of Christmas. For a thread that has “nothing to debate”, there are at least 78 postings. Not counting my own responses and the people just Valteron-bashing, there are a few dozen people expressing opposite viewpoints (and not being personally insulted by me, you will note).

You say it is provocative and Tomndebb says it is not a real debate. Kind of contradictory, is it not?

Opposition doesn’t imply debate. Nor does posting. If I opened a Pit Thread with an OP of “All environmentalists can go fuck themselves” it would be both provocative, garner posts disagreeing, and not be a debate!

Perhaps you’ll trust this coming from an athiest; people don’t think you’re a troll because you’re an atheist yourself. Neither do they think it because you disgree with religion. They think it because you’re an enormous ass about it. Atheism vs. religion doesn’t come into it, because your posts are well crafted enough to ensure that you garner the maximum amount of annoyance and insult. Short of just saying “fuck 'em all”, that is.

There’s no double standard. You’re being treated just as any huge ass with idiotic posts would be treated. I’m all for censuring those who called you a racist fuck outside the Pit. I still will not indulge in personal insult even though I have every right to here in the Pit.

However, I will pit those horrible people who are coming into your home, forcing you at gunpoint to sit down in front of your computer and to read my postings.

How do I know? Since you hate me so much, I fail to see any other reason why, you would read my postings and then take the trouble of dumping all over me.

You know, I think what it boils down to is that VCO3 is on vacation, so Val decided somebody needed to fill his shoes while he was gone. With any luck, Val will quit being a jackass after he gets over the fact that nobody likes him enough to give him any Christmas gifts, or when **VCO3 **gets back. Hopefully, whichever comes first.

Valteron, I ask that you re-read over my posts in your recently shutdown thread, and see that I was addressing your behavior. I also ask that you consider what I was saying. Conversation ebbs and flows. Even though this is in print, this is still conversation. You need to allow for the fact that others will also speak, and be more flexible and able to interact with the people commenting on your topics. Otherwise, it is as I said, you’re raging at the incoming tide of posters commenting, and eroding yourself faster than anything they can do.
