Thanks, Ike, for the tip and the link! I’lll try it out. I’d cruised through the Outlaw Cook site and enjoyed it. Your right, one heck of a writer. Of course MFK Fisher of beloved memory will always be first, but he was great. He was the first one who helped clarify my visceral reaction to Martha Stewart.

I’ve decided to subscribe to CI. It may help the mail carrier overlook those “donated” subscriptions to mortuary science mags, catalogs for inflatable sheep, etc. that should be arriving soon!

Gourmet and American Family Physician are the only ones I get right now.

I’ve been wanting to subscribe to The Nation. Anyone know where I can get a good deal? (Other than their web site, that is.)

Discover
Creative Classroom

And Sigh…Don’t lose too much respect for me: Cat Fancy. It’s a bit more silly than I thought, so this will be a one-year only subscription.

I also will pick up People on occasion, when I’m wanting basically mindless gunk to amuse me. Usually when I’m sick–like now. Bleh. Dumb sinuses. But oooh, look what she’s wearing!

Smithsonian

I recommend this to all SDMBers. I’ve seen so many questions on here I could have responded to with info from past articles if I had just been able to lay my hands on the right issue.

A few regulars from the bookstore:

3D Magazine
Games Magazine

And a couple of British imports with good cover discs:

PC Review
Digit

I finally dropped Wired; it’s getting more and more interested in making bunches of money by floating a stock issue, so you can buy more yuppie gadgets.

These are all “bookstore subscriptions”. The bookstore (Cody Books here in B.C. - not that Californian one) sets your mag aside when it comes in, and calls to let you know. None of those big discounts, but it’s a family business and a good store.

And I keep forgetting to sign up for Smithsonian …

I also swipe my Mom’s People magazine so I won’t have to be seen buying it. I’ve also been known to peek at those soap opera magazines, but only for humor value, I swear…

I’ve been receiving CI for free for years now. It’s a great magazine, but the one thing that’s a little dopey about it is the “Quick Tips” section in the beginning, where they have cooking tips sent in by readers. Half of 'em are so obvious that it’s humorous - “After I’m done cooking, I often use a wet rag to clean the counter. It works marvelous, and you can also use it to quickly clean out dirty dishes for re-use!” You get a free subscription if you send in a tip that gets published. I figured, hey, I can do that! So I came up with what I thought was an obvious cooking tip, sent it in, it was published, and I’ve gotten the magazine free since.

I tend to call the magazine “Anal Cook’s” since they really are completely anal about what they do. “We wanted to find the best way to roast chicken, so we bought 75 chickens and roasted them. The first we cooked at 200 degrees for 4 hourse, the second at 225 degrees for 3.5 hours…” etc. etc.

And Uke, thank you SO much for that link to Simple Cooking. I’ve been searching for it on and off for years, ever since Jim Harrison recommended it in one of his columns. Yippy!

Scientific American and Discover magazine.

I’m a geek.

My New Yorker subscription has lapsed for the moment, until they once again come around with a subscription offer for less than $25 a year (this will be the third time we’ve performed this little dance – they send me an $18/year offer, I subscribe, at renewal time the price is upward of $30 a year, shortly after expiration I get another one for slightly less, followed by another bid, and so on until I convince my wife that I’m going to spend more than on buying individual issues during the coming year and she lets me re-up). In addition to the sort of things Ike mentioned, I’ve really enjoyed Malcolm Gladwell’s articles over the last few years.

Otherwise, the current crop in my household is down to:
