Permanent Move to St. Helena (UK)

Baah, St Helena is for wimps who want the soft life. Move to Kerguelen…

MrDibble, whose father’s ancestors fled St Helena for beautiful Cape Town just as soon as they were able.

Pitcairn is actively seeking immigrants at the moment, with free land available.

Can a UK citizen just up and move to St. Helena without any specific authorization? I know that US citizens don’t need any sort of visa or other permit to live and work in Puerto Rico, but I was under the impression that some or all of the UK island territories didn’t work that way.

Given that Pug last posted on March 28, 2013, you’re quite unlikely to get one.

Guess he moved after all.

Kerguelen is the closest bit of land to the antipodes of my home, so I’ve always been fascinated by it. Sunken microcontinent inhabited only by penguins and seals, nothing but glaciers, icefields, rocks, and tundra.

No, the tiny ones are too small to have any sort of unlimited right to move there, and they aren’t part of the UK anyway*. Given the ability to support yourself and willingness to invest in the local economy, then I’m sure that it is possible though.

  • it’s complicated

Hey now. Don’t sell them short! They have the Kerguelen Cabbage!

Also, nowadays, feral reindeer, sheep, rabbits, cats and trout.

Also, wasn’t there a Biggles book about Kerguelen?

haha very true

Confirmed that it does not work that way in the Cayman Islands. UK residents need a visa to take up residence or work in Cayman.

Moreover, Cayman has a policy of promoting geographic diversity when evaluating applications for a permanent residence status. Citizens of the UK get knocked 5 points because there are too many of their countrymen here. The French or Irish, on the other hand, get maximum points and thus have a bit easier time establishing PR.
And as to St Helena… the new Education Director in St Helena will be a transplant from Cayman. I assume she still needed a work visa from St Helena.
