Has anyone ever actually reacted allergically to a psychedelic where it has induced a permanent trip?
Or does the whole concept just act as another drug myth?
Not sure about allergically per se, but plenty of drug users have been given a permanent trip. It’s called brain damage.
I don’t know about other hallucinogens, but the chance of LSD causing brain damage(physical damage to the brain) is quite low. It has an extremely high LD50 and I’ve never seen a study linking it in anyway to the type of neurotransmitter damage one sees with drugs like MDMA. However, as with any powerfully emotional and reality bending experience, it is quite possible to LSD to trigger a psychotic break in someone who is predisposed to that sort of thing. I don’t know if you would consider that a “permatrip” but it’s certainly something one would want to avoid.
that should have read “type of neurotransmitter specific damage”
I really hope NurseCarmen isn’t a nurse, it would indicate her entire knowledge of the field was obtained by watching the drug films during high school health class.
There is a very small number of people who claim that LSD has caused persistent visual distortion for them. None of these people claim that the magnitude of these distortions is anything like it was during their actual drug use. It has been often attributed to the fact that everyone has some degree of visual distortions all the time. Are eye site is wonderful but far from perfect. Generally, people ignore and are unaware of these distortions as they have been there their whole life and is quite normal. Anyway, the idea is that seeing more severe distortion while under the influence made these people aware of the distortions that happen to a small degree all the time. I have not personally spoken with any of these people personally, so I can’t vouch for it myself, but that is the theory. (besides the obvious one that the LSD actually caused real persistent vision problems.)
I am unaware of any reports of similar cases from mushrooms or peyote. Of course, this doesn’t mean they don’t exist, but there probably isn’t a very large number of them.
