I just rewatched that scene. The very first shot of the interior of the coffin shows a yellow stain on the white satin. 53:07 into the episode. The next shot of the interior is at 53:48 and also shows the yellow stain and again at 53:59.
Huh. I looked carefully and thought it looked spotless at first.
Anti-climatic.
And specifically, after that graveyard scene.
Anyway: I couldn’t figure the Pete Strickland ending. I thought he quit earlier, then he was back, then… is he going to be a continuing character ‘on the other side’? Did his contract negotiations fail and he needed to be written out?
And who paid the guys who killed Ennis? His partner was paid out by the Casino guy, but he didn’t give any cash to the Mexicans. So it looks like it was the Casino guy who was employing the Mexicans. Did he do it as a favor? Or was Ennis fundamentally just a fall-guy the whole time?
I assume that the casino owner organized the murder on his property because Ennis’ involvement in the kidnapping was bad for business. He had become a liability.
That makes sense.
And did the DA lose his job (perhaps to Hamilton Burger) and never retry Mrs. Dodson? Or are we to assume that she was acquitted in the retrial, perhaps again represented by Perry?
I think with three people voting for her, he’s unlikely to retry.
I do wonder if bribing one of the jurors will come back to bite Perry Mason somehow.
I would think that’s a certainty. And with Pete actually doing it and now working for the DA’s office, it will be interesting indeed.
I doubt that bribing the juror will come up in the next season. For one thing, revealing that would mean Pete is admitting to a crime.
I bet season 2 fast forwards a bit and everyone has settled into their new roles with Mason being an established lawyer.
I think you’re right.
Well, there’s “come up” and there’s “come up.”
Do I think that he’ll be arrested or put on trial for it? Nope. But to I think someone might sneak around it, or do I think the juror might have his hand out asking for more, thus complicating matters for all? I think that would be a juicy issue that the show runners couldn’t ignore.
Not sure if it’s been mentioned, but in the ‘question Ennis’ fantasy, it looked to me as though Perry was wearing a suit identical to or at least similar to those E.B. was seen in, and furthermore had his hair slicked back in a sort-of E.B. look.
Interesting touch, if that’s what was intended.
Huh. I didn’t notice that.
Bumped.
Interesting article on S2:
Season 2 premieres on March 6th.
Aha, thanks!
You know, the S2E1 plotlines are actually pretty interesting, though I’d forgotten how tired I was of his broody darkness and dark broodiness. I’ll keep watching.
I enjoy the noir-ness of the series. It was always a favorite genre. The cast is excellent, with Chris Chalk adding some terrific depth and nuance to the Paul Drake character, and Shea Whigham’s world-weariness and dissolution adding some humor.
Just finished season 1.
Do we ever find out what happened to Charlie’s body?
Why would they burn the money?
Why did Ennis’s partner have him killed?
What happened to Seidel’s body and why did nobody seem too worried about what happened to him?
Where did the “reborn” Charlie come from?
Or are we just not supposed to think about any of these things?
I can’t answer any of those questions, but this is a pretty good series, especially the acting by the leads, Rhys, Rylance and Chalk.
The first season was a bit uneven, but everything is clicking in season two.
