Okay, so I generally enjoy the show. You have to accept the premise.
Anyway, last week’s episode had a howler of a situation where the plot contrivance overcame anything resembling medical policy accuracy or common sense. Spoiler alert.
Spoiler space.
So the plot revolved around a woman doctor who was being blackmailed. The criminals were a large crew of secret agents working to murder a businessman by having him die accidentally during surgery. The guy was having a secret heart procedure with the hospital pretending it was some less invasive day procedure. There was all sorts of security and non-disclosure agreements.
So the plan was the criminals had surveillance on the doctor’s wife, and if the doctor didn’t comply they would kill the wife. So the doctor is instructed to slip the patient an injection of heparin, and then an a prescribed time make an “accidental” incision and thus the patient would bleed out on the table, because the heparin would impede clotting.
All well and good. Convoluted, but clever. Here comes the groaner. So the patient is sedated and the procedure is well along with some sort of endoscopic insertion reviewing the patient’s heart. The doctor applies the heparin, but at the last minute her conscience wins out, and she decides to call off the procedure and declare herself unfit.
So what does she do? Announces to everyone that she is unfit to complete the surgery, tells everyone else to clear the room, and she will remove the instruments and safe the patient herself. [groan] Wait, you’re telling me the patient is aenesthecized, has an endoscope surgically inserted, and the one person being left in the room is the one declared unfit to be there?! Holy stupidity, Batman! And everyone complies with her, because she’s the surgeon.
Okay, not everyone complied. One nurse stays to help her by nicking the patient’s blood vessel while the doctor’s back is turned. Because she’s the plant.
Which allows the dramatic plot points of (a) the bad person reveal herself without any other witnesses, (b) Harold save the day by knocking her out, and © Harold is the only one available to assist the doctor perform emergency open heart surgery. Right.
