Pet Rocks and other Iconoclastic Notions

I didn’t have the heart to hijack the ongoing thread Anyone own an unusual/exotic pet? with this idea, so maybe the notion of really exotic (read that: stupid) pets got me to wondering what drove the phenomenon of Pet Rocks, Pet Turds, and those blasted Sea Monkeys from years back. I don’t know: maybe they’re still popular in novelty shops, but it’s been ages since I went in such a place.

What drives such wacky reactions to things like pets? Do you (or people you know) look on the idea of pets as ridiculous?

If you own a pet, what is the main fascination? Is it the high likelihood that you will outlive the thing and thus gain some sense of superiority?

Do you feel alone without your pet around?

We just took our cat in for an annual checkup and rabies shot and combout, and the house felt really empty most of the day until she came back in and tried to reacquaint herself to the place. Short memory, I’m saying.

Any other tangential pet-related topics are welcomed to hijack this hijack.

Have at.

My parents do not like dogs or cats. Maybe that is why I had a pet rock. This is not a joke. I really did have one. I even painted it.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard pet rocks described as “iconoclast” before. Maybe if a bunch of them were tossed into a burlap bag with the Sacred Kitten of Katmandhu before tossing it into a well.

I think you have to be a really serious animal lover for such a notion to form.
