PETA does it again

And we all know that human slavery in the USA was restricted to the south, of course.

I played this game for the first time last night after finding a link to it on another message board (nice timing since it’s over a year old). It’s actually really cute and sorta fun (for a Flash game, anyway). Here’s the link to it.*

  • I do not support any of the crazy bullshit this game is pushing. Paradoxically, it works better for me as an advertisement for KFC, as evidenced by the fact that I had one hell of a craving for some Colonel after playing it!

Huh? Are you mad because I mentioned the South? If other organzed institutional slavery used this argument, please cite it, I’ll be glad to include them in future mentions.

Otherwise, you sound kind of like you’re taking it personally.

I don’t get your point. “They” did so, not because they reconsidered the merits of the “we can’t let them all loose, how will they fend for themselves” argument. They did so because many of them were shot to death and the rest were overrrun by the armies of Grant, Sherman, Thomas, et. al.

The bullshit argument remained bullshit, it was simply overtaken by events. The fact that humanity survived the freeing of the slaves serves to refute the argument that it couldn’t be done.

Yes, I know this is a simplification of an enormously complex issue.

A bit off-topic, was I the only one who watched Saving the Michael Vick Dogs on NGC?

Tearjerking, that was.

I sponsor Little Red, she was a bait dog. Was she in it?

I’d agree with that.

My point was that, regardless of the cause, the slaves were ultimately all set loose and they did manage to fend for themselves. That was possible, because slaves were actually human beings who were perfectly capable of fending for themselves after being let free. Your pro-slavery “bullshit argument” didn’t want to acknowledge this fact, preferring to regard the slaves as beasts of burden who would run amok and starve if left unsupervised. It was bullshit precisely because slaves weren’t animals.

So the slaveowners weren’t really making the same strawman argument as those who oppose the abolition of dog breeding and factory farming are today. It was entirely reasonable and ethical back then to shuttle a bunch of slaves to Canada and let them experience the joys of freedom. Shuttling a bunch of pedigreed dogs, lab animals or domestic swine into the wilderness and letting them loose is not a remotely comparable situation.

Is that an actual quote from PETA, Cluricaun? Cos that’s fucked up. Fishing’s one of those things I’m pretty meh on - I find it a bit icky but at the same time I’ve always wanted to do it - but telling kids their dad might kill their pets because he goes fishing is seriously fucked up.

Oh, and PETA? You have to have a penis to fish? Sexists.
